When Kyal and Kara started renovating their home ten years ago, they never imagined it would become their way of life. Now, after starring in two home renovation reality shows, regularly collaborating with design shows and running their own interior design and construction company, it’s clear that the couple are a hot commodity in the Australian renovation industry.
Their latest project, Bay Builds, consists of two semi-detached houses that have been given a timeless holiday feel, but each with its own unique features, the details of which have been shared over six episodes on the couple’s YouTube channel.
A curved cooker hood for a unique touch in the kitchen
The first of the two houses, House 1, boasts a bright French-inspired interior with soft cream tones, cosy white linen and sophisticated champagne details.
The use of arches characterises both the interior and exterior design, which is reflected in the shape of the windows, the helical staircase and the curved walls of the kitchen. In the kitchen, the Sensa Taj Mahal stone is a particular highlight, offering outstanding anti-stain protection and echoing the sinuous architecture of the house when used to clad the beautiful, curved cooker hood.
The same colour was also used for the large kitchen island, which doubles as a dining table. “The soft sandy tones of Sensa Taj Mahal were the perfect choice for the light colour palette of the House 1 kitchen,” say Kyal and Kara, who teamed up with Etchells Building Design for this project.
Dekton Sabbia and Dekton Marmorio for two stunning bathrooms
According to the couple, they chose Dekton Sabbia for the en-suite bathroom because “it works very well to emulate the look of natural Italian travertine, but with a much more practical finish.” “Its low water absorption rate means that the surface does not expand and its resistance to scratches makes it an excellent product for use in bathrooms,” they add.
Meanwhile, the other main bathroom is in dialogue with the en-suite bathroom, using a similar surface but with its own character: Dekton Marmorio. “We chose it not only for its superior durability, but also because the soft, linear veining of Marmorio looks very stylish in the long, linear Cosentino washbasin, which emulates the look of natural travertine.”
The powerful Dekton Khalo for a unique powder room
In addition to these two bathrooms, Cosentino products were also used for the third bathroom in the house. Here, Dekton Khalo shines on the attractive floating washbasin and part of the wall cladding. “Khalo’s stunning earthy shades are a statement of intent that catches the eye as you enter the room and adds a level of sophistication comparable to the Patagonia natural stone it has been inspired by,” says the couple, who have worked with Cosentino products for years.
“We’ve been using Cosentino products in our projects for over a decade now. The versatility and variety of their products means that there’s always a suitable product to achieve the look we want. We first used Dekton in a kitchen about ten years ago and we loved its durability. Since then we’ve used Dekton in many projects, each with its own unique look.”
