Renovating an iconic space is always a challenge for designers, because it’s not just about creating something new: it’s also about making sure that those who know the space are satisfied with the result. This is the case of Rocamar, an iconic restaurant in Baiona (Galicia, Spain), which has been serving seafood since 1973 and was recently renovated by Grupo Vigape in collaboration with Mercedes Álvarez.
“The main architectural challenge of this project was to find the perfect design, not only for the environment, but also for the functionality of a well-established restaurant like Rocamar,” says the studio.
A design in dialogue with the natural environment
Indeed, the restaurant’s prime seaside location was the team’s greatest inspiration. “The project concept aims to enhance and integrate the building into its idyllic natural surroundings, conceiving the interior of the restaurant as a visual and environmental extension of it,” the studio further says.
To achieve this, the professionals chose Dekton Grigio to “reproduce the textures and colours of the rocky surroundings on the floors, wall claddings and bar top in the restaurant”. This colour from the Pietra Kode collection features a grey shade with warm touches inspired by Grigio Alpi natural stone, a variety with macrofossils of the Vicenza Stone made popular by the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, who used it for his villas and palaces in Vicenza (Italy). In addition, some of the slabs used in the bathroom feature Dekton Ukiyo’s symmetrical grooves to add dynamism to the space.
High quality, good advice and functionality
“We considered using self-levelling floors or microcement, but in the end, considering the concept and the quality-price ratio, we opted for Dekton,” says the team, which was won over by Grigio’s aesthetics and ease of cleaning (a damp cloth is all that is needed to clean it). Also decisive were the material’s resistance to impacts, scratches, salt residue, UV rays, extreme cold and heat – even fire – and the support provided by Cosentino.
“The choice of Dekton was determined by its quality, the wide range of finishes available and the reliability of delivery times. It’s a material that adapts to all kinds of surfaces, which is why we used it for floors, bathroom walls and even the bar top and worktop. Working with Cosentino has been a great experience, not only for the high quality of the material, but also for the technical team and the advice from start to finish that characterise the brand,” says the studio.
The experts are also pleased with the ease of installation, for which the studio’s technical team worked hand in hand with Cosentino’s. So much so, in fact, that another Cosentino surface was used in the restaurant. The surface chosen was Scalea Calacatta Ice, a white Spanish marble with subtle grey veins, which gives the design of the private area a refined, classic elegance.
