Paris in Malmö? Yes, indeed. And with a traditional, delicious cuisine. But how? Thanks to La Fonderie restaurant. The name of the restaurant, which means ‘foundry’ in French, evokes the essence of the French capital with a precise blend and masterful touch of local cuisine, and it also pays homage to the place it occupies, as the restaurant is located in a place that is also worth a visit. It is none other than the Gjuteriet building in Varvsstaden, in Malmö, Sweden, a former foundry in ruins that the Kjellander Sjöberg Studio has transformed into an office building.
So, in addition to the must-see building, there is the added attraction of La Fonderie. Offering a traditional French menu, the restaurant welcomes guests for lunches, dinners and various soirees. And because everyone likes to eat well and enjoy themselves, the restaurant has left no detail to chance and boasts an interior design in which Dekton provides the elegant touch.
A relaxed atmosphere
The restaurant’s sober spaces and relaxed atmosphere, which allow diners to enjoy themselves without rushing, are reminiscent of the elegant brasseries of the Passy district of Paris. Reviews point out that people spend more time here than they had planned, simply because everything is so charming. But the truth is that when the owners contacted interior designer Mija Kinning and artist Sara N Bergman, it was hard to imagine such a place, given the dilapidated state of the building. “I think we needed a restaurant where the atmosphere is relaxed and you can stay as long as you like. It serves quality food for lunch and dinner and cocktails in the evening at the bar, which is a focal point of the restaurant.”
To create this pleasant atmosphere, they decided to use Dekton Grigio, a colour designed by Daniel Germani. It is a warm colour inspired by natural limestone, combining shades of grey, white and brown, which works perfectly with the furniture and materials used throughout the restaurant, giving it a brutalist feel. This material was used for a number of bar tops, as well as the islands and various cladding surfaces. The choice left no room for doubt, as it was essential to achieve an aesthetic and functional effect, bearing in mind this is an area that is exposed to a lot of traffic and requires maximum cleanliness, all of which Dekton fulfils to perfection.
