Situated in the historic setting of Ekeby Bruk, just outside Uppsala (Sweden), Ekeby Kök is the design studio that everyone raves about for the way it blends local heritage with the latest innovation. The space that once housed the famous Upsala-Ekeby porcelain factory is now home to a stunning example of design: the DIOSA kitchen, a project with worktops and other claddings in the ultra-compact Dekton Grigio surface and executed by Nordiska Stengruppen.
According to its owner, Nils Brolin, when you enter the building, which dates back to 1886, you enter a place where “you can feel the wings of history in the midst of modern kitchens and bathrooms”. This historic setting further enhances the design of the DIOSA kitchen, a project that combines top quality materials with a contemporary aesthetic.
The star of the project, Dekton Grigio, is a material inspired by natural limestone, with warm shades of grey, beige, white and brown that work in perfect harmony with the wood surfaces. “We love the contrast it creates with the warm tones of the wood, bringing a sense of craftsmanship and warmth to the space,” says the Ekeby Kök team. The design also includes carefully crafted details, such as the fronts and sides of the kitchen island, which are also made in Dekton, further enhancing the level of refinement.
A philosophy based on quality
Ekeby Bruk is much more than a traditional shop; it is a place to be inspired. “We have been developing the shop for 20 years with the aim of making it a place where people can walk around and just feel good. We don’t imitate others; we dare to go against the grain,” says Nils Brolin. This philosophy is evident in their decision to stay in this location rather than move to another shopping area.
The shop’s commitment to quality and design also extends to its human team: According to Brolin: “Everyone who works here has a great passion for interior design. We enjoy what we do and I think that is one of the reasons why we feel so good here and why those who start here stay.”
Dekton Grigio: durability and timeless aesthetics
The warm and sophisticated look of Dekton Grigio is a perfect match for the functionality and modern design of Ekeby Kök. This ultra-compact surface not only offers exceptional resistance to scratches and stains, but also ensures a long life, in keeping with Ekeby Bruk’s philosophy of long-term quality.
“Every kitchen we design is filled with passion, joy and creativity, with every single detail carefully crafted to achieve a stunning end result that will last a lifetime,” says Brolin. In this case, elements such as Gessi taps in brushed brass – inspired by a trip to Milan – and Bora appliances complete the project, underlining the perfect balance between functionality and style.
The history of Ekeby Bruk is inextricably linked with the pursuit of design excellence. What began in the 1990s as an initiative to import high quality tiles from the Mediterranean has grown into a brand renowned for its exclusive kitchen and bathroom designs.
