Kitchen worktops, front and island
In the world of architecture and interior design, there are spaces that, despite their small size, make a big impression. The latest renovation project carried out in San Sebastián by Amai Studio, the studio founded by Amaia Elias, is one such case. With spectacular sea views, this 58-square-metre flat is proof that thoughtful design can transform a small space into a functional, welcoming and aesthetically surprising home.
The star of this home is undoubtedly the kitchen, which is a perfect example of the Japandi trend: a fusion between the warmth of Scandinavian style and the refined simplicity of Japanese design. But what really makes the difference in this room is the use of Sensa natural stone in Orinoco colour, which adds depth, texture and a unique character.
A kitchen that goes beyond functionality
“It is a minimalist kitchen integrated into a small flat with spectacular views,” says Amaia Elias, founder of Amai Studio. “The customer wanted a functional, visually stunning space, as this was to be used as a second home for relaxation.” This premise guided the entire project, in which the kitchen not only fulfils a practical role, but also becomes a design centrepiece. “The kitchen was designed to take up little space, but be the star of the design and integrate perfectly with the living room,” she says.
The use of Sensa Orinoco natural stone was essential to achieve this effect. This material was used for the worktop, the front wall cladding and the bar top, the latter integrated into a structural post that provides visual and functional continuity. “We chose Sensa because it is a natural material with a striking and unique design, in line with the minimalist but powerful approach of the project,” says Elias.
Minimalist design with powerful details
To create a sense of spaciousness, the Amai Studio team decided to use the same material across a range of surfaces, from the ceiling to the floor, and to leave the space free of mouldings and visible handles. This not only maximises the visual space, but also reinforces the minimalist character of the design.
“The decision to use Sensa was mainly an aesthetic one, as we wanted an element of great visual impact that could also cover large areas,” says Elias. However, its technical properties, such as its resistance to stains thanks to Sensa’s protective treatment, were also decisive.
The kitchen bar top, which incorporates a structural post, is one of the biggest challenges and successes of the project. “The biggest challenge was to integrate the bar top with the structural post and achieve visual and functional continuity,” says the interior designer. Thanks to specific cuts and meticulous adjustments, the final result turns this feature into a design element.
Naturalness and sophistication
Orinoco granite stands out for its unique texture and organic details that add dynamism. The subtle touches of orange that run through the surface of the stone perfectly complement the modern and masculine colour scheme of the design. “We were looking for a more dynamic and organic visual effect that only natural stone could provide,” says Elias.
In addition, the ease of maintenance of Sensa worktops is an advantage for this project, where comfort and functionality are as important as aesthetics. “Sensa worktops are very easy to clean and maintain thanks to their protective treatment,” says the interior designer. This makes them the ideal choice for a home where relaxation is a priority.
All in all, the renovation of this flat in San Sebastián not only transforms a small space into a functional and elegant home, but also celebrates the beauty and versatility of natural materials. According to Amaia Elias: “Working with Cosentino materials has allowed us to combine design and functionality in an exceptional way. Their durability and the technical properties of Sensa’s protective treatment were key to ensuring the quality of the project, especially in an environment exposed to sea salt.”
