Hospitalet de Llobregat, Spain
It's an example of how to work one’s way through strict urban codes and tight site conditions to come up with a complete residential program
La Rocío is located in the old worker’s neighborhood of Collblanc. The programmatic requirements were met by dividing each level into two apartments, and this was done by setting a stairwell perpendicular to the rear facade, which allowed separating one night zone from the other, as well as making each flat enterable through a central point of the floor.
The building’s exterior aesthetic results from a daring reinterpretation of Catalan modernisme, narrowing and vertically stretching the windows that mark rhythm differently in each of the two facades not flanked by party walls. A Mediterranean cobalt blue is the color selected to unify interior and exterior, applied on the street-side elevations and the wet cores of the apartments.
