Baran Demirok and his emotional design

Turkish designer Baran Demirok is behind the design of this chair that breaks the boundaries between design and art. A work of art which does not lose its functional character, providing a comfortable seat and, at the same time, an almost artistic experience. “The project aims to create a utilitarian sense rather than a manifesto. It provides a sculptural feel while at the same time responding to the anthropometric and comfort needs of the user”, explains Demirok.

The ‘David’ chair plays with the contrast between the static and the flowing, providing a very complex feeling “by combining a rigid appearance with a dynamic positioning”, says Demirok. “The stillness of the compact surfaces contrasts with the dynamism of the form”, an aspect in which Dekton, because of its link with stone, has a lot to do with.

A timeless surface

According to the designer, the chair is inspired by Michelangelo’s David. “Its pose, static but ready to jump, and the sensations aroused by the naked body and the smooth stone, are the starting points for the product”, he says. “Combining modernity, originality and a simple statement with state-of-the-art technology, the ‘David’ chair puts the noble and sophisticated look of Dekton at the service of everyday furniture”.

Lightweight material

Inspired by natural stone, the texture and look of Dekton were key to this design. “The biggest challenge was to find a material that was not heavy or fragile. The 4 mm thickness of Dekton gave the project the necessary lightness”, explains Demirok. Specifically, the colour chosen was Dekton Opera, in a 4 mm Slim format that gives the design that lightweight look.

A mix of materials

In addition to its lightness, there were many reasons that led the designer to use Dekton for the design of the chair. “Its high durability, the wide range of textures available, the size of the slabs, the sustainability of the material and its sophisticated look”, were some of them. The result is a chair featuring curved lines on the seat and a triangular design with a lot of movement. As a finishing touch, “gold metallic details add an edgy touch, while the veining of Dekton Opera adds harmony to the contrasts”, concludes Demirok.
