Scandic Hamburger Börs Hotel 03/09/2022 | Comment Case Study Silestone gives a fresh new look to an iconic hotel in Finland Schauman Architects Location Turku, Finland Material Silestone Farbe Eternal Marquina, Eternal Noir, Eternal Calacatta Gold Menge 276 cut-to-size slabs Architektur/Design Schauman Architects Application Worktops, tables End date 2021 Thickness 12 mm / 20 mm The third life of a historic hotel in Turku The most famous and iconic hotel in Turku, Finland, has been built from scratch after dismantling the old building from the 1970s. This large scale project, managed by YIT construction company and designed by Schauman Architects, has resulted in a new, more energy efficient building equipped with modern technologies. But not all is gone. The new Scandic Hamburger Börs hotel retains the essence of the original building in its design. The oldest part of the hotel, protected by Finnish heritage legislation, has been restored, and the new building, built over the extension carried out in the 1970s, maintains a historical dialogue with it. The hotel’s origins date back to 1894, when the Hamburger Bierhalle restaurant opened its doors. Back then the site was occupied by a two storey stone building dating from the 1830s. Later at the turn of the century it was renovated in an Art Nouveau style that still remains today. Known for her charisma and leadership, hotel founder Wallina Valtin bought the restaurant in 1898, while the hotel began operating in 1904. Valtin sold the Hamburger Börs hotel to the Turku Cooperative Society, who were in charge of the extension project carried out in the 1970s and which gave the hotel a second life. Modernisation of the building began in the late 2010s. At that time, the owner was the insurance company LocalTapiola. However, now it has been acquired by the Scandic hotel chain, which is giving this architectural icon a third life. A project with a soul The new building has been designed by Schauman Architects and preserves elements from the early 20th century. Its Más restaurant, located on the ground floor, is accessed through a reception area, a lounge and a spacious foyer. The heated winter garden by the restaurant and the open air terrace next to the rooftop bar complete the common areas. The hotel has 272 rooms and suites in total. According to Janne Halin of the architecture studio, the project involved a dialogue between several different styles and the main challenge was to adapt the new building to its surrounding architecture. Combining the old with the contemporary while paying homage to the past has been the great challenge of the project. Quality materials Among the materials used in the renovation project, the architecture studio chose Silestone for the worktops and tables in the restaurant and the rooms. Eternal Marquina was the colour chosen for the bar counter, a colour that evokes the Nero Marquina marble, bringing elegance and depth to the space and rounding off the Spanish inspired design of this common area of the hotel. The tables in Eternal Noir, another dramatic shade, complete the atmosphere. Silestone surfaces are highly resistant to stains, scratches and are easy to maintain, which makes them the ideal material for spaces like this. Charming rooms The hotel’s cosy rooms feature an elegant interior design. From the luxurious suite with beautiful arched windows to the standard rooms, they all offer an atmosphere in which the hotel’s history and contemporary comforts come together. “The interior design of the rooms features a neo-Scandinavian style that uses warmer colours to create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, replacing traditional styles based on light and simple colours”, says interior architect Jaakko Puro. Designed by the Arquitecturia studio, the building has a revamped façade that has been clad with DKTN, as well as the outdoor terrace flooring. The design features large windows that open and close like a book and are concealed when closed, leaving the façade completely opaque and clean in terms of visual appearance. The ideal material The choice of DKTN for this ventilated façade was a great technical solution to solve this architectural challenge. The surface proved to be the ideal material after several tests for this type of window with the blacksmith, in addition to ‘the unbeatable conditions we were offered and the excellent treatment and service throughout the process’, the studio explains. The technical properties of this material, which is resistant to temperature changes and stains, make DKTN an optimal surface for outdoor use. Another added value is the aesthetics of the chosen colours, which give a modern and contemporary look. Inspired by the classic cement floors, with a calm movement, DKTN Kreta brings a seamless design in matt texture and grey colour. Benötigen Sie bei einem Projekt Hilfe? Architect Jean-Philippe Nuel was responsible for the renovation of this 30-year-old luxury hotel, which has retained the 1920s architecture and design by Mallet-Stevens while updating the whole. The areas to be renovated were the spa's cabins and the restaurant tables. The renovation sought to strike the perfect balance between the historic architecture of this area in the south of France and the ocean inspired materials. In addition to this, the architect chose Cosentino materials for both areas, which not only blend in with the beauty of the surroundings, but also add extra strength and quality. Technical quality Jean-Philippe Nuel’s aim was to encourage the use of materials that meet design requirements, but also and above all technical and quality requirements. These requirements included providing as natural a finish as possible, as well as easy maintenance to suit the uses of such premises, while at the same time ensuring greater resistance and a design that blends seamlessly into the space. For this purpose, Silestone was used in the spa's cabins: Lagoon was chosen for the basins, while Tebas was the colour chosen for the furniture worktops. Benötigen Sie bei einem Projekt Hilfe? The renovation, carried out jointly by Spanish architect Álvaro Sans and Vittorio Grassi Architects, has given a new look to the Meliá Milano, a hotel located in Via Masaccio, very close to the trendy area known as City Life, the new centre of luxury shopping in the city. The functional and architectural approach of the renovation project led to the rebirth of this 20-year-old hotel, opening up spaces by creating a new, spacious and flexible layout of the common areas. The interior gardens, high skylights and contemporary use of materials and textures give the bar, restaurant and co-working area a sophisticated feel. A chic colour Style and functionality are the main elements of this project in which natural materials such as marble, wood and green shades have been combined with Cosentino surfaces. Specifically, Silestone Eternal Marquina was used for the cladding and countertops of the bathrooms, the alcoves and furniture in the meeting rooms, and the worktops and several tables in the buffet and bar area. “The Suede finish creates a unique feeling of comfort”, says Vittorio Grassi. “Furthermore, its appearance, imitating the veins and nuances of precious exotic marbles, fits well with the Spanish marbles in the common areas and the style of Vescom’s fire retardant curtain fabrics”, he further says. It feels more like a luxury hotel, with its elegant design, sophisticated materials and precious interior design. For this new headquarters of Europe’s largest glass wholesaler, the firm has commissioned the interior designer Nathalie van Noordenne, who has put all of her passion and creativity at the service of this mega-project for this family company whose origins date back to 1938. It was in the 1930s that Jan van Noordenne founded this family business. From a local company, it grew into an international wholesale business specialising in glass. Today, in its new headquarters, every effort has been made to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the company’s offices and restaurant. Exotic beauty at the reception desk The reception desk is the crown jewel of the lobby. The designer chose Sensa Orinoco to add a warm and stylish touch to this area. The rich, earthy tones of this colour, inspired by wild granite, along with its white, golden and copper veining, bring glimpses of beauty to this space. A restaurant to match The company’s restaurant, where Sensa Orinoco has also been used in large 2 cm thick slabs, has been conceived following the same design concept. The centrepiece of this area is the large Sensa Orinoco fireplace – an explosion of beauty when lit and a piece of sculpture when unlit. Furthermore, part of the wall has been clad with the same material. Certainly a high standard for a restaurant where customers, guests and staff can relax and enjoy an exclusive atmosphere. Located in Myyrmäki, on the outskirts of Helsinki (Finland), the hotel offers common areas, affordable prices and an atmosphere as comfortable as that of a hotel and as relaxed and intimate as that of an apartment. The eight storey building features 322 contemporary style studios and over 1,000 m2 of common areas, including a gym, sauna, bicycle parking and a variety of spaces for relaxation and work. Functionality and minimalism are key to both the architectural design by Avarrus Architects Ltd and the interior design by dSign Vertti Kivi & Co. Some are designed for single people looking for socialising, while others, with several rooms, are perfect for families or teleworkers. In terms of furnishings, it is possible to book fully furnished studios (including kitchenware, for example), part-furnished or with no furnishings at all. All of them have their own kitchen, equipped with worktops in Silestone Calypso. Scandic CPH Strandpark 12/22/2021 | Comment Case Study A new hotel full of design near Copenhagen Koncept Location Kastrup, Denmark Material Silestone I DKTN Farbe Silestone Blanco Capri, Coral Clay, Eco Luna 14 | DKTN Danae Menge 67 m2 Architektur/Design Koncept Application Worktops, buffets, tables End date 2021 Thickness 20 mm Relaxed spaces with natural materials The newly built hotel Scandic CPH Strandpark presents itself as a relaxed and welcoming meeting point in an ideal location. Halfway between Oresund, Copenhagen airport and the Danish capital, it offers privileged views and the beautiful backdrop of the local beach. It is the first hotel in the Scandic chain to focus on the brand’s new strategy of targeting a specific new design-loving guest. Designed by the architecture and design studio Koncept, the project maintains a relaxed and open character in its design and interior design. It combines natural materials, such as Scandinavian wood, rope and rattan, with durable, recycled surfaces to suit the interior design trends of the future. In particular, DKTN and Silestone have been used to add character and functionality to spaces. Functionality and aesthetics, two added values ‘We chose Silestone mainly because the table tops had to be durable, easy to maintain and clean in the restaurants, lounges, rooms and rooftop bar,’ Vera Arvidsson from Koncept explains. ‘And because it is resistant to heat and the constantly changing Scandinavian weather, DKTN works perfectly in the open kitchen and on the outdoor terraces,’ she continues. All these technical features also have the added value of sustainability, which reinforces the concept of the hotel itself, as the surfaces are made from recycled materials. Multiple applications Specifically, light sand-coloured DKTN Danae in matt finish has been used for the kitchen worktops, buffet and outdoor tables. Meanwhile, the coffee tables in the lounges, as well as the tables in the restaurant and skybar, are made of Silestone Coral Clay. Conversely, Silestone Eco Luna 14 – customised for this project and in Polished finish – has been used for the desks in the rooms, the worktops in the bars, the tables in the lounges and the conference room, all custom-designed by Koncept. In keeping with these materials, the window sills in the rooms feature a beautiful natural stone of travertine marble. Benötigen Sie bei einem Projekt Hilfe? Zeeduin Facade 12/21/2021 | Cosentino Flagship Project Ultra-thin façade cladding gives Zeeduin a slightly floating effect By Ignace Deconinck Location Nieuwpoort, Belgium Material DKTN Farbe Nayla Menge 462 m2 Architect/Designer Ignace Deconinck Application Ventilated façade Thickness 4 mm DKTN, insulation, aesthetics and durability for facades The Zeeduin renovation project is situated on the corner of Franslaan with Lefebvrestraat in Nieuwpoort. After a few decades, the façades - covered with relatively thin prefab silex concrete elements - showed concrete damage due to carbonation. The client and architect opted for a total renovation for the façades, with 4 mm thick DKTN Slim plates by Cosentino, glued on a ventilated aluminium support structure. The apartment building dates back to the 1970s and has 6 above-ground floors. The gallery terraces, made of in situ concrete with the floor slab running from the inside to the outside without thermal interruption, were fitted with a mortar-bed tiling. Water penetration caused concrete damage and general degradation of the concrete coating. The absence of façade and roof insulation also contributed to a total renovation. DKTN Slim, 4mm full of possibilities A light façade cladding had to give the building a new, sleek and contemporary zest. This resulted in the choice of DKTN Slim plates (with a thickness of 4 mm), glued to an aluminium carrier. “This way the façade could be insulated to a maximum without bringing the façade surface too far forward,” according to the architectural engineer Ignace Deconinck of the eponymous Architecten Expertisebureau from Veurne. A small balcony construction with a walking zone was provided for the apartments on the façade corner - with in the original condition only a balustrade in the façade surface. Not evident from a technical point of view. Good coordination (including dimensions and planning) between the main contractor (Aquastra), the balustrades subcontractor (Aluform) and the façade cladding subcontractor (Murex Stone) was required. After concrete repair, the gallery terraces were fitted with a new reinforced terrace compaction system and glass balustrades with front mounting of the uprights. Colour stability, dimensional stability and pressure resistance are high. With a fire reaction class A2, s1-d0, DKTN can even be used for tall buildings,” says Stephanie Bevernagie of Cosentino. Dolce Vita Amadora 11/22/2021 | Comment Case Study High durability for a high traffic area Broadway Malyan Madrid, Broadway Malyan Portugal Location Lisbon, Portugal Material DKTN Farbe Blanc Concrete, Vegha, Keon Menge 140 m2 Architektur/Design Broadway Malyan Madrid, Broadway Malyan Portugal Application Flooring End date 2019 Thickness 12 mm Quality for a high traffic area in Lisbon With hundreds of people visiting one of the largest shopping centres in Portugal, the materials used in the flooring are paramount to ensure the durability of the design. That is the key to this project: a resistant and durable material such as DKTN that meets the needs in terms of design and functionality at one of the entrances of the Dolce Vita Amadora Shopping Centre, in Lisbon, Portugal. Two architects from Broadway Malyan, one Spanish and one Portuguese, teamed up to design this high traffic area with open spaces exposed to the elements, which is located at one of the entrances to the shopping centre. The availability of DKTN in large format slabs made it the perfect material to create a seamless and expansive space to welcome visitors. Grossformat The colours chosen for the project, based on a neutral palette, enhance the sense of cleanliness and spaciousness in this high traffic area. Specifically, the colours chosen were Blanc Concrete, Vegha and Keon in large format slabs -some of them up to 3.20 x 1.40 m- and with a thickness of 12 mm. Thanks to its availability in large format slabs, DKTN is the perfect solution for designing large surface areas, minimising the number of joints and providing a more welcoming and functional design. Three colours in harmony While Blanc Concrete, an aged white with small veins in light grey and beige, adds luminosity, Vegha (from the Natural Collection) brings a natural feel with its textures inspired by limestone and sandstone. Finally, the light toned and bright DKTN Keon adds the finishing touch to the interplay of colours. Benötigen Sie bei einem Projekt Hilfe?
