A façade with luxurious details

Skin is at the heart of the business model of Integrated Aesthetics, a centre offering comprehensive plastic surgery and dermatology treatments. The building’s façade was designed to be in dialogue with its interior spaces, where beauty plays a major role in the design. Method Architects took on the challenge of designing this façade using materials that would create a well-detailed and balanced composition, including Dekton by Cosentino.

Method Architects first learned about Dekton in Houston, Texas, where they worked in collaboration with the Cosentino team to find the perfect shade for the project. Its aim was to achieve a surprise effect. The chosen colour, Orix, achieved this perfectly.

Industrial beauty

Inspired by industrial design, the worn cement look of Orix adds the ideal touch to this facade, achieving a luxurious and professional finish, in line with office interiors. In addition to style and beauty, the use of Dekton brought a number of advantages thanks to its technical properties. On the one hand, it contributes to the energy efficiency of the building. It is also maintenance free, weather, scratch and stain resistant and easy to clean.

The beauty of marble to clad the façade of a hospital

DYS architecture chose Dekton for the stylish façade cladding of the Leon Judah Blackmore Pavilion at Vancouver General Hospital. The renovation of the building is a tribute to Leon Judah Blackmore, a Polish immigrant who made Canada his home and flourished as a businessman and real estate developer. In memory of his passion and contribution to the community, his philanthropic foundation donated $18.4 million to the hospital after his death.

Two years after that, the hospital’s Centenary Pavilion has been renovated and now bears his name as a tribute. The Vancouver-based Cosentino team collaborated on the project by supplying the Dekton Aura15 cladding material used on the façade that frames the entrance to the building.

The perfect match

Inspired by natural marbles such as Carrara and Calacatta, Aura15 was chosen for its elegance and technical features. Its white background crossed by grey veins blends perfectly with the grey edges of the façade and the silver signs with the name of the pavilion. The result is an elegant style that brings calm and balance to the hospital atmosphere, where Aura15 adds the sophistication of stone.

For many years to come

Thanks to its technical features, Dekton provides a highly durable material which requires no maintenance and is unaffected by wear and tear, UV rays, extreme temperatures and stains such as graffiti, making it ideal for the emergency entrance of this hospital, which is exposed daily to heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Therefore, although the initial specifications for the project called for marble, the ultra-compact Dekton surface was chosen for its high durability and ease of maintenance. Sustainability was also a plus when choosing it, as Dekton improves the energy efficiency of the building. Thus, Aura15 will be the face of the Leon Judah Pavilion for many years to come.

Dekton, insulation, aesthetics and durability for facades

The Zeeduin renovation project is situated on the corner of Franslaan with Lefebvrestraat in Nieuwpoort. After a few decades, the façades - covered with relatively thin prefab silex concrete elements - showed concrete damage due to carbonation. The client and architect opted for a total renovation for the façades, with 4 mm thick Dekton Slim plates by Cosentino, glued on a ventilated aluminium support structure.

The apartment building dates back to the 1970s and has 6 above-ground floors. The gallery terraces, made of in situ concrete with the floor slab running from the inside to the outside without thermal interruption, were fitted with a mortar-bed tiling. Water penetration caused concrete damage and general degradation of the concrete coating. The absence of façade and roof insulation also contributed to a total renovation.

Dekton Slim, 4mm full of possibilities

A light façade cladding had to give the building a new, sleek and contemporary zest. This resulted in the choice of Dekton Slim plates (with a thickness of 4 mm), glued to an aluminium carrier. “This way the façade could be insulated to a maximum without bringing the façade surface too far forward,” according to the architectural engineer Ignace Deconinck of the eponymous Architecten Expertisebureau from Veurne.

A small balcony construction with a walking zone was provided for the apartments on the façade corner - with in the original condition only a balustrade in the façade surface. Not evident from a technical point of view. Good coordination (including dimensions and planning) between the main contractor (Aquastra), the balustrades subcontractor (Aluform) and the façade cladding subcontractor (Murex Stone) was required. After concrete repair, the gallery terraces were fitted with a new reinforced terrace compaction system and glass balustrades with front mounting of the uprights.

"Dekton delivers high-quality and a great technical performance compared to other existing surfaces"

Nayla, an off-white full of nuances

The architect opted for a dark-coloured base (the ground floor) and a light superstructure to give the floors a more floating effect. “For the ground floor, we opted for a coating in fired blue bluestone, a good match with the small grey speckles, the white mass of the Nayla type and the terrace floors in a grey tone,” says Deconinck about the choice for the Dekton colour “Nayla” (white speckled).

“Thanks to its properties, Dekton delivers high-quality, technical performance compared to other existing surfaces: highly scratch-resistant, frost-resistant and thaw-resistant, and resistant to salty air and UV rays. Colour stability, dimensional stability and pressure resistance are high. With a fire reaction class A2, s1-d0, Dekton can even be used for tall buildings,” says Stephanie Bevernagie of Cosentino.

Dekton is the star of the new AXA building’s façade

The new building of the AXA insurance company in Northern Ireland boasts a contemporary façade with a combination of materials and textures. Designed by architects Tim Robinson and Aron Ramage of GM Design Associates and installed by Heron Brothers, the façade brings together design with efficiency and sustainability. The chosen surface was Dekton, not only because of its design, but also because of the technical advantages it offers for this type of application, making it the ideal material for façades.

“I was familiar with Dekton as I had seen it in the Cosentino Belfast showroom, as well as in some Heron Brothers projects, and it has always impressed me. As an ultracompact surface, it suits façades perfectly. The fact that it is resistant to harsh weather conditions and UV rays means that its colour will not fade with prolonged exposure to the sun”, explains Michael Connolly, Commercial Director at Heron Brothers and head of the project.

A trendy colour

The façade of the new building features a variety of materials, among which Dekton Strato, in perfect combination with the glazed areas and the aluminium cladding, stands out. Although ventilated façades are considered the best option in terms of sustainability and efficiency, the planning permission did not allow for a façade clad entirely with Dekton. The solution was to choose Strato, a grey shade with darker particles inspired by cement. “I met with the Cosentino team in Belfast and went through five or six different colours”, explains Michael Connolly. “Nayla, Lunar, Kreta and Keon were some of them. But in the end we thought that Strato, with its classic grey cement look, would be the ideal choice”. As for the anchoring system, from the beginning of the project it was agreed to use the Nvelope system for concealed fastening. KEIL KH anchors were used for the rear fastening of the Dekton panels.

A highly durable material

UV, frost, thaw and stain resistance. These are just some of the features that make Dekton a perfect material for outdoors and guarantee its colour stability. This was precisely one of the concerns that Michael Connolly posed to Darrel O’Kane, manager at Cosentino Belfast, when choosing the cladding material for the façade of the building. “Traditional materials always need maintenance, either to keep them clean or to repaint them in a couple of years”, he explains from his experience with other Heron Brothers projects. “When we looked into Dekton, we realised that this durable surface was perfect for this project”, affirms Connolly.

A sustainable façade

“In addition to all of its technical advantages, Dekton is a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle”, adds Michael Connolly. This means added value for any architectural project. Furthermore, it guarantees a long lifetime, which is also a plus in terms of sustainability, as the façade will not scratch or crack and therefore no intense maintenance will be required.

Design with character

This eight storey building, whose façade stands out in the landscape, is situated in the residential neighbourhood Aguas Férreas, in Lugo (Spain). For its design, “one of the basic premises of the developer, Dmanán Viviendas, was to design and execute an environmentally friendly building with an appearance that would stand out from its surroundings”, explains architect Patricia Montes from Aringal SL, the architecture and engineering firm in charge of the project. Therefore, from the very beginning of the project, Aringal’s work focused on combining the client’s objectives with the philosophy of its own company, which is very committed to incorporating sustainability into its projects.

The majestic appearance of the façades and their clean design gives this building a unique character. “The straight forms, terraces, window openings and materials used are its unique features”, says architect Patricia Montes. Two materials were combined in the façades of this building, creating a play of textures: Dekton Edora, a light grey shade with a minimalist look, and Corten steel.

Bildnummer 131 des aktuellen Abschnitts von Aguas férreas von Cosentino Deutschland

The perfect match

“Dekton and Corten steel, a material whose colour changes continuously throughout the oxidation process due to the effect of light and atmospheric conditions, are combined in the façades, giving the building the distinctive final appearance sought by the planners“, says Montes. Both materials form a perfect combination in compliance with the Guía de Colores y Materiales de Galicia (Guide of colours and materials of Galicia). “In this way, they contribute to the proper integration of the building into the landscape and to a better quality of public space”. Dekton’s properties are also perfect to go hand in hand with Corten steel, a material that forms a surface oxide layer that could stain the materials used on the façade. “Something that does not happen with Dekton thanks to its zero porosity, a result of a sintering and ultra-compaction process exclusive to Cosentino”, says Montes.

Stylish shapes

According to the studio, orientation, views and location were decisive in the design of this unique building which houses a total of 32 flats. “The sunlight and the wide, clear views to the south-east determined the location of the building’s rooms, with the main rooms facing southeast and the sleeping areas facing north-west, opening onto the common space that gives access to the dwellings”. The south-east façade, with large terraces framed by Corten steel volumes running along the façade as an extension of the main rooms of the flats, opens up to the clear views of the valley. Meanwhile, the window openings on the north-west façade, also framed in Corten steel, are designed to optimise the capture of natural light.

A commitment to sustainability

The projects of this architecture firm are characterised by pursuing maximum sustainability and opting for Breeam certification with the aim of reducing the environmental impact on the surroundings. To this end, they apply passive design strategies, minimising the use of resources such as energy or water, and opting for the use of materials with a low environmental impact. “In this sense, the use of Dekton ensures thermal comfort thanks to its technical properties. It is also a material with a low level of VOCs and has an environmental product declaration (EPD)”, concludes Montes.

A unique façade in the heart of Vancouver

The hexagonal shape of the balconies gives character and personality to The Pacific by Grosvenor, a residential building in downtown Vancouver and a symbol of luxury. Thanks to the design by IBI Group and ACDF, the east and west façades of the building are full of movement and depth. Filled with balconies, both façades feature a geometric pattern in which different textures are combined: The light shade of Dekton Aura 15 stands out under a black framed glass railing.

The use of Aura 15 adds elegance and elevates the exclusive character of its architecture. This Dekton colour is inspired by Calacatta and Carrara marble, a blank canvas against which striking veins run, bringing dynamism to the surface and establishing a dialogue with the clouds of the sky.

The perfect material for a ventilated façade

Dekton’s technical properties and, especially, its versatility, make it the perfect material for creative applications, such as that seen in the balconies of The Pacific. To ensure an optimal performance, Dekton Aura 15 was installed as a ventilated façade, which means that it is not directly attached to the structure, but a small gap is left between the two to allow air to pass through. This technically complex application required a thin and lightweight material that was not only beautiful, but could withstand temperature changes and would not degrade or fade over time.

Stylish antique white

Dekton Aeris was chosen for the entrance of the building and the key areas of the façade, as a material that blends in with the rest of the colours and greenery present in this unique residential building. In antique white with fine light grey and beige speckles and veins, Dekton Aeris perfectly mimics the texture of natural stone, but with the advantage of being virtually maintenance free. In addition to its shiny appearance, this thin and lightweight material offers perfect technical properties to ensure the durability of the façade. Its colours and properties have the added value of enduring over time.

A symbol of luxury and sustainability

In a growing Vancouver neighbourhood you can find The Mahogany, a mixed-use skyscraper whose façade showcases its luxurious and sophisticated interiors. ‘I was looking for a smooth, marble-like finish at the main entrance with the panels leading to the lobby’, explains Diane Delves, President and CEO at Quantum Properties, the developer of the impressive skyscraper. The building is located in the vibrant neighbourhood of Abbotsford, British Columbia (Canada), overlooking Mill Lake. The façade of this unique building, designed by Site Lines Architecture, was clad with Dekton Aura 15 panels, which, according to Delves, ‘added the perfect finishing touch to our beautiful mixed-use skyscraper’.

The Mahogany is equipped with luxurious facilities such as an indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi, an outdoor atrium and a gym, among others. It also boasts environmentally friendly systems, like geothermal heating and cooling and energy-efficient glazing. A symbol of luxury and sustainability with the finishing touch of the Dekton Aura 15 marble-look finish. ‘Dekton’s interior and exterior panel options and concealed mounting system made it the perfect solution’, Delves concludes.

Bildnummer 218 des aktuellen Abschnitts von The Mahogany at Mill Lake von Cosentino Deutschland

Perfection inside and out

The Site Lines Architecture studio was interested in using Dekton for façades because of the endless design possibilities, as well as the durability and strength of the materials. Cosentino built a good relationship with the architects and Quantum Properties and invited them to visit the headquarters and factory in Almería, Spain, where they immediately fell in love with Dekton’s designs and applications. Aura 15 helped to create a combination of envelope panels that connects the exterior and interior of the building. This colour – inspired by Carrara and Calacatta marbles – is reminiscent of the look and feel of natural stone and offers many benefits: it requires little maintenance, is much more durable and is available in large formats. Dekton is a surface resistant to graffiti, UV rays and extreme temperature, which convinced them as the perfect choice for this Vancouver building. Thus, the Aura 15 panels were fitted both in a façade area, for a visual emphasis, and in the main lobby area of the luxury property, creating a sophisticated, exclusive and harmonious space.

A clean and harmonious design

With over one hundred years of history, Fannie May chocolate stores are a Chicago institution. Fannie May’s first recipes date back to 1920, and since then they have created more than 100 unique and delicious treats. It is precisely this innovative spirit that is reflected in the design of all their stores, such as this one in La Grange, Illinois.

The team of DXU Architects opted for a façade clad in Dekton Zenith, a pure white against which the Chicago-based chain’s iconic red logo stands out. A subtle black strip in Dekton Domoos further accentuates the overall clean and harmonious image of the store in the building as a whole.

Having used Dekton with great success in previous applications, architects were won over by the endless possibilities of this material in terms of performance and design. The perfect installation of the large panels carried out by the Stone Systems team fully achieved the desired result.

Bildnummer 247 des aktuellen Abschnitts von Fannie May von Cosentino Deutschland

Dekton, the perfect partner for the most demanding exteriors

The old brick walls of the building were not straight. This problem required the fitter to make several strategic adjustments that allowed the Dekton panels to straighten the walls. Additionally, the resistance of Dekton prevents stains and scratches caused by urban traffic and the large amounts of salt used to de-ice pavements during the winter.

Unlike other products that fade in colour and require high maintenance, Dekton remains unaltered over time, regardless of wear and tear, weather conditions or other external factors.
