Europe at risk of losing thousands of jobs and factories closure due to dumping practices in the Stone Industry
July 23, 2013
A.St.A. Europe (Agglomerated Stones Association of Europe) press release:
Brussels, 23rd of July, 2013. A.St.A. Europe, the European Association of Agglomerated Stones Manufactures alerts of the imminent risk of loss of thousands of jobs in Europe and, of the risk of losing the global leadership in a highly specialized industry, recognized for its investment in innovation and R+D.
A.St.A. considers most importers of agglomerated stone from the People’s Republic of China are applying dumping policies aiming to gain the European Union market and consequently deleting all European competitors. Low Chinese prices which lay under production costs clearly indicate that their objective is not to obtain benefits but to gain the European market.
To fight these dumping practices, A.St.A. has requested the intervention of the European Union to guarantee fair market conditions, right economic stability, and to stop the illicit behavior of Chinese importers.
The volume of the agglomerated stone imports from the People’s Republic of China has increased considerably over the past years. These Chinese aggressive commercial dumping practices are having a highly negative economic impact on the European producers.
The European industry of agglomerated stone has always been characterized by the quality of its product and the continued investment in its fabrication processes, looking for the best and most modern machines and installations, constantly looking for innovative solutions for its products with the goal of giving the best quality and the best service to its clients.
All the qualitative investments of the European industry are being unfairly neutralized by the dumping practices of Chinese importers who, in addition, are provoking European industry drastically reduction or even ending of investment in innovation.
The main European producers are using currently only about 50% of their production capacity. The industry is not only suffering in production levels, sales and economic margin but also in the financial costs derived of the non exploitation of the industrial investments.
For these reasons, A.St.A. shows satisfaction with the initiation of the anti-dumping procedure by the European Commission and, above all, for the implied recognition of Chinese producers dumping practices.
A.St.A. and its members respect entirely the EU procedures and will comply with future EU resolutions adopted. A.St.A. will collaborate as requested with the European Commission’s ongoing investigation until it is completed.
