What was the aim of the project?
The owners, Mark and Angela Rodrigues, named the venue Palace Supper Club and wanted an interior design and branding concept from beginning to end. The brief was eclectic, relaxed glamour for an interior that was fitting for a function space, bar and restaurant. The intention was to create a space where you could feel you could be anywhere in the world, from palaces to high-end hotels to intimate bars.
The Palace Supper Club is 700 square metres and has separate areas that provide different experiences for guests: intimate, encompassing, casual, luxury. I wanted the venue to have a visual and tactile experience, so that customers wanted to reach out and touch surfaces. Every touch point needed to have dimension and texture: velvet furnishings, antique mirror, brass detailing, pressed metal, chain chandeliers, mosaic tiles, marble-inspired surfaces.
Why did you select Dekton® by Cosentino?
The first time I touched Dekton® by Cosentino I knew it was exactly what I was pursuing. As an inner-city venue, natural marble was not an option in Palace Supper Club due to high traffic and spillage, so all the benefits of Dekton® were hard to ignore. Its resistance to heat, scratches, abrasions and stains ensures the venue will look amazing for years to come. As we had multiple applications for Dekton® – walls, bar, and bathroom floors – its availability in 8-millimetre and 12-millimetre thicknesses was also a huge advantage.
The matte finish of Aura 15 is like touching satin fabric, and the light background with grey and gold veining complemented the palette. The ladies’ bathroom stalls in Palace Supper Club are also clad in Gada, a beautiful product that looks like natural stone. The Palace opened in September 2017 and the Dekton® surfaces are as perfect as the day they were installed.
The 11-metre-long bar in Palace Supper Club is clad with Dekton® to express the contemporary opulence of the venue. An antique mirror behind the bar reflects the bespoke brass-chain chandeliers, and the brass footrest around the base of the bar picks up the colour in the Dekton®. We designed brass-studded high-back bar stools in champagne-gold velvet with a contrast hand-dyed, hand-woven fabric that I sourced in Shanghai, and textured pattern-fabric backs, which I found in a Shanghai market. The herringbone flooring is solid French parquetry finished with a Black Japan stain.
The owners wanted the most luxurious bathrooms in Brisbane. It needed a wow-factor floor to complement the gold mosaics and antique mirrors, so we had a stonemason cut the Dekton® slab into pieces and lay the Palace logo as brass stripping throughout.
