For architect and designer Darren James, the SOL – Manly Terraces project, located in Brisbane (Australia), “is defined by its seamless integration of architecture and interiors, where every surface contributes to the sculptural feel of the home. A calm and refined palette, both indoors and outdoors, underpins the design, with materiality playing a central role in creating a timeless atmosphere.”
With 389 square metres built across two levels, this turnkey home combines functionality and sophistication, enhancing the living experience through a coherent and richly textured material language.
Durability for a high-use space
The kitchen was conceived as the starting point for the home's materiality. Here, benchtops made from Dekton Marmorio bring a serene and contemporary character, marked by the elegance of its soft veining and stone-like finish. The choice of this material not only ensured the durability required for a high-use space but also defined the calm palette that is repeated throughout the rest of the house. From this everyday hub, the project began to explore the continuity of Dekton as a connecting thread to other spaces.
One of the most notable gestures was the extension of Dekton Marmorio beyond the kitchen, incorporating it into the staircase steps, bathrooms, living room wall cladding, and even the outdoor kitchen. As the studio notes, “this application and continuity reinforced the flow between spaces and elevated the sense of permanence throughout the home.”
The strategy aimed for visual coherence and to unify the sensory experience across all environments. Using Dekton as a connecting thread strengthened the relationship between private and social areas without disrupting the project's aesthetic.
Reasons to choose Dekton
Darren James' team was clear about the choice of material: “We wanted a surface that offered uncompromising durability without sacrificing refined design. Dekton gave us the flexibility to use a single finish across multiple applications, such as kitchens, staircases, and walls, ensuring consistency in tone and performance.”
The studio particularly valued the ability to integrate the same material into such diverse applications without compromising either durability or aesthetics. As they emphasise, “it worked perfectly within the calm and understated palette, allowing us to carry the same material expression both indoors and outdoors.”
The technical features of Dekton Marmorio were decisive. According to the architect, “Dekton's durability and versatility allowed us to push the boundaries of design while supporting the project's calm and continuous palette. Its resistance to stains, scratches, and UV rays made it equally suitable for interior cladding and outdoor use, while its slab format created a clean and monolithic look.”
In this sense, the material provided both the reliability needed in functional areas and the sophistication to elevate the overall aesthetic of the home. “This project exemplifies our design and construction philosophy: blending architectural form with everyday liveability.”
