NKBA winning kitchen features Dekton® Orix and Opera

Case Studies, News

Dekton® makes an award-winning statement in this holiday-home kitchen, which received two accolades at the NKBA Excellence in Design Awards 2019: winner of the Auckland chapter’s kitchen of the year, and first runner up for New Zealand’s best kitchen. Designed by Michelle Gillbanks from Kitchens by Design, the kitchen is warm and welcoming with organic and earthy textures, materials and hues that complement the clients’ contemporary style.

The owners of the holiday home on the Coromandel in New Zealand wanted a distinctly different kitchen to their permanent residence, which was contemporary and minimal with a monochromatic palette. “My challenge was to create a kitchen with the opposite look and feel, whilst still providing a functional, user-friendly space for their friends and family to enjoy throughout the year,” says Michelle.

The kitchen is the hub of the six-bedroom holiday home, and faces the dining table and lounge, with sliding glass doors offering a view and connection to the waterway. The clients regularly entertain upward of 20 guests and have overnight visitors to stay and therefore needed a kitchen with butler’s pantry to comfortably accommodate catering for additional people and storing extra beverages and food. The clients also wanted easy-to-clean and low-maintenance surfaces as the house can be vacant for long periods of time.

Michelle selected Dekton® Opera and Orix for the benchtops and splashbacks, providing a durable surface with natural colour and texture.

Dekton® Opera from the Natural Collection is on the kitchen island and side benchtop. The Natural Collection emulates the elegance and beauty of natural stone, and Opera is inspired by ever-popular Carrara marble. “It gives definition and depth, whilst still being a robust, fit-for-purpose work surface,” Michelle says. She paired the ultracompact surface with timber veneer joinery in a dark hue with visible grain.

Dekton® Orix is a stand-out feature on the splashback wall of the kitchen. A recent addition to the Industrial Collection, Orix has a surface evocative of aged cement with an eroded, fragmented appearance and tones of steely grey, blue and green. A stainless-steel benchtop is in keeping with the industrial style, and vibrant green plants add verdant colour and life to the kitchen with their vines trailing down the Dekton® wall.

Michelle continued Dekton® Orix on the walls of the butler’s pantry, using large-format slabs to create a seamless look.

Congratulations to Michelle on the award-winning kitchen and the beautiful use of Dekton® to make a visual and functional impact in the space.
