Embracing Space’s Port Melbourne Project

width=White is considered a classic choice for kitchens, but the opposite shade can be just as enduring. When Melbourne-based interior design studio Embracing Space was engaged to design a kitchen with a black colour palette, they sought materials that would bring a sense of lightness to the space.

Embracing Space is owned by interior designer Teresa Kleeman. The studio’s services include all aspects of interior design and decoration, however Teresa is highly regarded for her ability to create kitchen spaces that perfectly fit her client’s lifestyle and design aesthetic.

The Cumberland Road house is located in the Melbourne beachside suburb of Port Melbourne. Teresa explains the brief for the kitchen was for a modern, contemporary space that showcased one of the client’s favourite tones – black.

“We had to be careful that it wouldn’t make the space look smaller or too dark,” she says. “The mirror splashback contrasts with the timber island and dark joinery and benchtop, making the space look less heavy. Having a benchtop product that would also stand the test of time was also a requirement.”

Teresa says Dekton proved to be the perfect surface solution. Crafted from a blend of the raw materials used to manufacture glass, advanced porcelain materials and quartz surfaces, Dekton is a smart, durable surface. Available in six collections and three thicknesses, its robust nature makes it highly resistant to scratching and staining, which is another benefit of choosing Dekton over other surface materials.

Teresa selected Dekton in Domoos with a slender 12mm profile. Domoos is a contemporary dark grey hue from the Dekton Solid collection and it perfectly complemented the Cumberland Road kitchen palette.

“Dekton was chosen mainly for that matte benchtop look,” explains Teresa. “We didn’t want to go with a gloss or semi-gloss benchtop. Dekton is such an amazing benchtop product – it’s scratch resistant, allows virtually zero water absorption and it’s a surface that is easy to clean. These points won the client over.

“My main love for Dekton is that it is highly scratch resistant and also that it is resistant to fire, heat, freezing and thawing,” adds Teresa. “The colours are great and perfect for any type of project.”
The kitchen features matte black joinery and two timber benches with contrasting black steel legs. The mirrored splashback allows light to bounce back into the kitchen space, creating a wonderful sense of openness.

To maintain a streamlined space, Teresa designed a walk-through pantry behind the kitchen. “This lets the kitchen area be the main focal point of the design,” she explains. “The beautiful contrasting materials complement each other without being over the top.”

Teresa selected another Cosentino product – Silestone ‘Blanco Zeus’ in Suede finish – for the laundry benchtops of the Cumberland Road home. Composed of 90 per cent natural quartz, Silestone is an incredibly strong and resilient surface, which makes it perfect for spaces like laundries, bathrooms and kitchens. The choice of the elegant white Blanco Zeus shade creates a beautiful contrast to the laundry’s black joinery.

The Cumberland Road project by Embracing Space is a timeless design with robust materials and a classic palette that will stand the test of time.
