Phoebe and Will Clinton-Baker go all black with Dekton Sirius

  Phoebe and Will Clinton-Baker, the husband-and-wife team behind Workshop Designs in New Zealand, have stepped over to the dark side with an all-black kitchen in their new house in Masterton. Having seen (and built) a lot of white kitchens, they wanted to do something different for their own home. But there were two requirements for going all black: to have a solid-black benchtop (without any fleck) and to incorporate timber accents. Phoebe and Will designed the kitchen, which Will spent late nights building. Creating an efficient work triangle, it incorporates the cooktop and ovens facing the wall, with the refrigerator adjacent, and the sink in the island bench opposite. “We love having the sink in the island because it makes working in the kitchen nice and social as it looks onto our living area,” says Phoebe.   Black-on-black is a sophisticated choice and works well for Phoebe and Will’s kitchen as the space is flooded with natural light. The couple selected different black materials, while ensuring they all had matt surfaces. They fell in love with the velvet texture of the black plywood and added barely visible black handles to the joinery. Black tiles against the back wall serve as the splashback, and a black sink, cooktop and oven are seamlessly integrated. Phoebe and Will selected Dekton by Cosentino in colour Sirius, for the benchtops because of its solid black colour, smooth texture and easy maintenance and durability. They wanted a surface that could be easily wiped down, that wouldn’t chip or scratch and that had a high heat rating, so dishes could go straight from the oven to the benchtop. “The Dekton benchtop has such a unique texture and everyone is drawn to it,” says Phoebe. “It’s totally functional too; not just a pretty stone but one that has a purpose and can withstand heat.”   Crafted details add warmth and texture to the kitchen. American oak shelves and an open corner unit in the kitchen island provide display space for plants, ceramics and books. Bronze tapware adds a metallic touch that will patina with age, and Phoebe picked up the rattan lampshades for a steal. LED lighting under the shelves complements the timber edges of the joinery and creates ambience in the space. “For us lighting is really important in any space, but particularly in a dark kitchen where it helps soften the room and cabinetry,” says Phoebe.   Phoebe and Will’s kitchen was a finalist in the NZ House & Garden Interior of the Year 2018 awards.
