Designer Spotlight: Calgary’s SmithErickson Designs

Principals and co-owners Stephanie Smith and Jenelle Erickson met in the building industry over 13 years ago. After working closely together for many years, their paths in design intertwined and ultimately led them to create a flourishing partnership in 2015; SmithErickson Designs.

The Calgary-based boutique design studio specializes in residential and light commercial design with an airy and timeless feel.  With their team, Stephanie and Jenelle build off an approach that great design should be both obtainable and stress-free,  and love creating unique designs that balance beauty with function. Together they bring out each other’s creativity and passion and begin each project with a fully collaborative approach.  We sat down with Jenelle and Stephanie to learn about the inspiration behind their projects and why they are a force to be reckoned with in the Calgary design scene.

What does a typical day look like for you at your design firm?

No day is the same here at SmithErickson with the many different projects we have in the works. From internal meetings reviewing projects, on-site meetings with contractors, going to suppliers to source materials, and presentations with our clients, it is everchanging. That is one of the exciting aspects of our job!

Where do you find design inspiration for your projects?
We draw inspiration for our projects from fashion, travel and architecture and, of course, our clients. When we get to know our clients, they inspire us to create unique spaces that are true reflections of who they are. Each of SmithErickson’s designs is thoughtfully planned with our clients in mind so that it is personal and speaks to their character. We strongly believe that getting to know our clients and keeping them engaged in the design process achieves the best results.

What do you find is the biggest request from clients when it comes to project planning?

One of the biggest requests from our clients is durability when it comes to project planning.  Many of our clients are young families who want to feel comfortable in their homes and want their homes to feel inviting and livable.

Tell us what your experience has been working with the Cosentino showroom in Calgary.

We love working with Cosentino and walking into their beautiful showroom to see samples of their product lines. We feel this is key for our clients and us to see the larger samples of the selections to know it is the perfect fit for our projects.

What is your favourite Cosentino product to specify and why?

Our favourite product to specify is from Silestone – Eternal Calacatta Gold. This quartz has the beautiful marble imitation that everyone is currently looking for, and it comes in a matte or polished finish. Not only does it look great, but it is also extremely durable so our clients can relax and know that their countertops will withstand their daily life routine.

One of our favourite projects where we used Silestone Eternal Calacatta Gold was our Glendale Project. We used this quartz throughout the kitchen, including the backsplash. The soft grey veining was the perfect complement to the subtle blue/grey cabinets.
