Silestone Featured in Canada’s Best Restroom Contest Final
July 9, 2018
While you normally dread having to use a public washroom, five restrooms across Canada might ease your apprehension. The finalists have been announced for the 2016 Canada’s Best Restroom competition. Hosted by Cintas Canada, Ltd., the competition highlights the country’s public restrooms with the most impressive design and architectural details. Designers Chris Salas and Laurie McBain of A Collaborative Design Group Inc. are in the running with a marvelously designed restroom featured at the Sauce Italian Market and Kitchen in Calgary. We recently sat down with Chris and Laurie to talk about their design project which features Silestone’s Lyra.
Where did you find your inspiration for this project?
The inspiration for the entire space was European chic, requiring soft yet timeless shades of elegant marbles and champagne tones. From the glittery floor and iridescent mosaics to the aged feel of the suede finish of Silestone’s Lyra countertops, the look expresses iconic Italian design. The feel is worn and loved with a pearly champagne wall colour. The flavour of the restaurant is modern Italian but our client loves the character that resounds from old Italian interiors.
What is it about this restroom that sets it apart from your average restaurant restroom?
The attention to detail throughout creates a unique flow. Updated with a modern glamourous edge while acknowledging vintage style, the space presents bright and elegant finishes which are pleasant to be in and perform functionally. Ladies like to use the space as a true powder room to freshening makeup and primp as the space is properly lit but with the chic décor, it doesn’t feel sparse or stark. The handcrafted details from the exposed polished plumbing and washstand base to the refined wall panels, framed mirrors, Italian Murano glass chandeliers and stylish makeup ledges in every stall, all play in the role of a sophisticated one-of-a-kind ladies room. You almost forget that this is a restroom as it is such an inviting package.
Why did you choose to use Silestone in this project?
The practical aspects of using such a technically sound product allows for peace of mind when referring our client to the Silestone line. It was our first choice from the start because it gives the classic appeal of real marble with the low maintenance advancements of today. The option to have the Lyra in a suede finish giving even more of the aged allure was just the cherry on the top.
What is the most important factor that goes into choosing a countertop surface for a public restroom?
The owner’s wish list and vision was our first priority. Yet in a public space, there are many boxes to check and all of great importance. Cosentino’s product lines and warranties made us choose the Silestone line fairly quickly. Low porosity, and high chemical and scorch resistance all are major factors in dealing with public spaces and especially in a food establishment. We knew the Silestone line would meet and exceed every aspect of building codes regulations for maintenance and cleaning as well as the practical aspect of impact resistance, colour fastness and strength. The style and finishes were a fantastic bonus as we did not have to compromise style for function in this project.
