When children leave home, life changes, so why not reflect this transition in our living space? This is exactly what a Tel Aviv couple thought when they turned to interior designer Zisi Hatsobai to renovate their flat into an urban loft perfect for hosting friends and family.

“It is a very special flat. It is the penthouse on the 27th floor of a residential building facing east, south and west (i.e. facing the sea)”, explains Hatsobai.

At the same time, the owners’ love of art also influenced the renovation project, which aimed to create a space in which they could easily display the works of art in their collection. “It was important to use a neutral and calm base that was also long-lasting”, says Hatsobai.

The professional interior designer took as a starting point for her design the range of colours of the large outdoor area: “The contractor had already determined the colours of the exterior areas, including the terrace, façade and aluminium shading. As they could not be changed, the project had to be integrated into them, so they were used as the basis for the choice of materials and colours for the interior areas”, she says.

A uniform ‘white cube’ with black and wood accents for contrast

With these premises in mind, the interior designer created a space in bright tones that feels uniform thanks to the choice of Dekton Kovik for the interior flooring. Inspired by the materiality of natural elements, with neutral base tones and a subtle pattern, this colour is characterised by a neutral light grey background crossed by random veins.

Both art pieces and black – used in shelves, tables, tv screens, lamps…– stand out in Hatsobai’s ‘white cube’. There are also touches of this colour in the bathroom – such as the taps and other elements –, which combine perfectly with the warmth of Dekton Danae, a colour reminiscent of sand swaying in the desert, which was used for the walls and other surfaces.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, it is the worktops that provide this sober contrast that gives rhythm to the design, warmly enhanced by the use of wood in all the rooms. “The kitchen worktop, splashback and island feature Dekton Sirius for a dramatic effect”, says Hatsobai.

With its textured appearance and greenish accents, this black tone adds realism and character to the atmosphere, while it is ideal for cooking and hosting guests due to its easy maintenance (it does not scratch, stain or burn, and can be wiped with a wet cloth).

A total look in Dekton Danae for a feeling of spaciousness in the main bathroom

As for the bathroom, the intended effect was different: to maximise the visual space. “It’s a relatively small space, built as a kind of cube. To deceive the eye and make the shower look bigger, the floor and walls are made of different thicknesses of Dekton”, says Hatsobai.

In addition, the use of Dekton Opera on the walls not only creates a feeling of spaciousness, but also conveys a sense of monumentality. The reason? Inspired by the elegant Italian Carrara marble, this colour features a simple light grey veining that adds depth and character to its creamy white background, offering a classic finish with a sensational velvety feel.

Finally, as is usual in her projects, Hatsobai also chose Cosentino materials for the cladding of the kitchen cabinets and the top of the large, bespoke table (in Dekton Kovik): “I had already worked with Cosentino on large scale projects. Our joint efforts are fruitful, and always produce good results. In fact, during this project, there were a number of challenges that we successfully overcame”, the interior designer says finally.
