Think pink! Rebekah Higgs transforms her powder room into a tropical retreat

From one room to the next, Rebekah Higgs of DIY Mom has shown her love for eclectic design, bold colour and unique patterns. When planning her powder room, she didn’t shy away from these design elements either, including a bold splash of pink, tropical-themed wallpaper and gold accents. Grounding the space and tying it to the other surface choices throughout her home, Rebekah included Silestone countertops to complete her oasis retreat. After the reveal, we connected with her to discuss the details and inspiration behind her bold design.

What was the design inspiration for your pink powder room?

For my powder room, I started with colour. I wanted to do something bold in a small space that would be a secret gem for guests. I found the artisan pink tiles from Centura and designed the rest of the space around that. The wallpaper and the teak vanity paired perfectly with the gold, wall-mounted faucets and the teak floating shelves, creating an eclectic throwback to the 1950s without feeling too matchy-matchy or dated.

Why did you choose Silestone for your countertops?

I went with the same Silestone Eternal Statuario stone used throughout the other spaces in my home, which was a great way for me to keep my whole-home renovation cohesive and budget-friendly. After doing my kitchen and main bathroom space, it was easy to get an off-cut from one of the other slabs to top the powder room vanity. I especially like the neutral colour and simple grey veining of Eternal Satuario, which adds an understated luxury to the otherwise bold bathroom space.

What benefits of Silestone do you like the most?

I really liked the extensive selection of colours, patterns and finishes that come in the Silestone surfaces collection. The product itself is also easy to clean and very durable, making ideal for high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. I also believe the style and look of Silestone ages gracefully, which can add value to any home.

Were you always interested in interior design?

I was a musician during my 20s and switched to the film industry after having my daughter Lennon in my 30s. I wanted to do something creative for work and developed the concept for DIY Mom.

My interior design portfolio has developed through my own home renovations, which has allowed me to now take on clients. Fun fact – I didn’t realize until years later that I had written a note to a friend in 1997 that I wanted to be an interior designer when I grew up.

What are some of your tips for people looking to include bold colours and patterns in a small space?

A small space is a great place to start with bold design choices. In my last home, I did black floral wallpaper in the space with black ceilings and baseboards. My guests were always pleasantly surprised when they discovered the space. You can splurge on luxury items or try our DIY projects in smaller spaces, too.
