Dekton Kelya Chosen for Sam Warburton’s Kitchen

Sam Warburton's kitchen with Dekton

Former international rugby union and Cardiff Blues player, Sam Warburton, lives in Cardiff with his wife Rachel and their daughter.  A star on the pitch, the now retired two-time British and Irish Lions captain relishes his new relaxed way of life.  Reflecting Sam’s desire to spend more time with his family,  award-winning Cardiff design consultancy, Space Fitting Living has designed an open plan kitchen that is perfect for family gatherings and entertaining.  Beautiful Dekton Kelya surfaces link the cooking and dining areas whilst also offering practical benefits such as easy cleaning.

The Kitchen Design

The completed space has a minimalistic grey toned colour palette, lending a modern feel when paired with the handleless cabinetry.  Two different seating areas are available for the family to use – a central kitchen island with a raised wooden breakfast bar as well as a larger dining table.  Cosentino’s ultracompact surface, Dekton in the colour Kelya was chosen for both the island and the tabletop.  It offers standout practical benefits that make it perfectly suited to busy family kitchens, including a high resistance to scratches, staining and heat.  Great for keen cooks like the Warburtons, hot pans can be placed straight down on to the surface from the hob or oven without the need for a trivet.

Dekton Kelya

Part of the Dekton Natural collection, Kelya is a dark grey hue with detailed veining.  The island boasts two drop edges clad in Kelya also, which gives the island a wow-factor, monolithic look. This is softened by the addition of a raised, wooden breakfast bar area, helping to zone the large expanse of worktop and create a central focal point to the design.

Sam says, “We had never thought about a matching table from the same material as the worktop, as I don’t think we would have even realised that was possible, but that works so well.  The Dekton is very easy to clean, which was important to us. It doesn’t scratch and we can put hot stuff straight on to it without worrying that it will be damaged.”

Thanks to a wall of cabinetry, including a larder hidden behind pocket doors, the kitchen has ample storage, which is perfect for keen home baker, Rachel.  Her baking gadgets and ingredients now all have their own home and can be hidden away at a moment’s notice if needed.  The kitchen also includes three ovens, ideal for entertaining, as well as additional nifty elements including an InSinkErator food waste disposer.  Concrete pendant lights above the island add an industrial touch, whilst also providing ample lighting for the breakfast bar.
