London Design Festival 2019: Cosentino embraces the beauty of stone

Cosentino is delighted to announce the exciting Carved in Stone installation that will be taking place in its flagship UK commercial showroom, Cosentino City London, during London Design Festival 2019.  Located at 28-32 Old Street, the stunning showroom is situated in the hub of the architectural and design community.

As a leader in innovation and design, Cosentino is proud of the strong relationships it has with key architectural practices in London and it is always looking for new ways to recognise and strengthen these.  This September, its Old Street based showroom will be transformed into an art gallery to celebrate London Design Festival 2019, with visitors welcome to join the Spanish company from the 16-20 September (10am-5pm) to admire five marble sculptures, designed by renowned architectural practices.  This installation, Carved in Stone, will be in collaboration with Cuellar Stone, a Spanish company dedicated to special projects involving natural stone.

What is Carved in Stone?

At the beginning of the year, leading UK architects were invited to put forward their proposed designs in line with the installation’s theme: ‘Life on Mars’.  Five winning entries will be hand selected by a panel of judges, including members of the Cosentino and Cuellar Stone families.

The winning entries will then be brought to life by craftsmen from Cuellar Stone in Spain, who will carve these intricate sculptures out of blocks of Macael Marble, measuring 500 x 500 x 500mm.  Marble has been chosen as the material as it signifies the very beginning of Cosentino.  Still a family owned company, the Cosentino Group started out its business with the quarrying and basic processing of marble in Macael, in the province of Almeria.

In addition, historically, some of the greatest designers in history have used marble, from Agra’s Taj Mahal, London’s Marble Arch and Michelangelo’s ‘David’. The use of this traditional material is a purposeful juxtaposition to the installation’s forward-gazing theme of ‘Life on Mars’, bringing together the past, present and future in celebration of the world of stone.

The five marble sculptures will be on show at the Cosentino City London showroom for visitors to admire throughout London Design Festival 2019, with the showroom open from 10am-5pm, Monday 16 – Friday 20 September.
