The Cosentino Group, was proud to celebrate World Environment Day (5 June) with a reflection on its commitment to sustainability and the progress it has achieved through innovation and continuous improvements.  The Spanish multi-national is committed to achieving a circular economy model at its facilities in Almeria, Spain.  This model has been developed over the last few years and focuses in part on the sustainable management of water in all its production processes. In addition, the model aims to extend the lifecycle of products through fostering an ethos of repair, reuse and recycle.

For Cosentino, water and its efficient and rational use is key.  With water shortage driving innovation to achieve water reuse, wastewater has become a valuable resource.  Thanks to an industrial wastewater supply and treatment closed circuit system, the company finished 2017 having achieved a figure of 98% reuse of industrial waste water at its Industrial Park in Cantoria (Almeria, Spain).

Cosentino is proud to have implemented a truly sustainable management system, which is not solely focused on water reuse.  The company is also pioneering the intelligent recycling of water for irrigation of the wide green areas in its Industrial Park.  Last year Cosentino diverted 40,500m3 of recovered water – the equivalent of 20 Olympic swimming pools – to this use.  This figure represents an increase of 224% with regards to 2016.  This is helping to drive an additional project, the ‘Green Belt’ – a designated area that surrounds the Cosentino Industrial Park, which in 2017 generated 30,000m2 of new green areas, and contributed towards the restoration and on-going maintenance of another 20,000m2.

As part of Cosentino’s on-going commitment to water management, in April 2017 the company joined the “EsAgua” platform, a pioneering initiative at national level that aims to position Spanish companies as the benchmark for sustainable management of water footprints.  “EsAgua” is overseen by the Water Footprint Network and AENOR, and aims to minimise the consumption of the water resources whilst promoting and advancing the technologies around the concept of a water footprint for companies.
