We are delighted to share this real home case study designed and installed by development direct, an award-winning Cosentino Elite Premium Studio based in Edinburgh. Creative director, Colin Wong was commissioned to design this space, named The Glasshouse due to the stunning array of windows. The customer was an offshore engineer who loved to entertain on his month off and the kitchen was designed to respect and enhance the dramatic architectural form of the house.

The cabinetry was positioned centre-stage with inspiration drawn from the curvature of the staircase and glazing. Twin islands, formed from Silestone quartz in White Storm, were introduced to rest on bespoke industrial cylinders. Curved extractors fall symmetrically over each of the forms with subtle curved edging on the tall pods adding just the required balance of detailing.

The elegant, polished finish of the worktops reflect the abundance of natural light, adding to the spacious feel of the kitchen, whilst tying in perfectly with the cabinetry. Colin positioned the islands at offset angles to add drama to the design. As well as providing a striking statement, the choice of Silestone ensures that the islands are also highly functional and practical thanks to high resistance to impact. In addition, Silestone also carries international certifications for quality and safety, for further peace of mind and is available in large sizes and customised formats.

The sink furniture was recessed into framework with storage hidden behind sliding glazed doors. This detail was replicated at first floor level to allow the client to enjoy the views from the comfort of his bed.

In all, Colin’s attention to detail and use of materials has resulted in a dramatic kitchen scheme with perfect functional ergonomics.

The Glasshouse has been shortlisted within the KBB Design category at the SBID International Design Awards 2017 – visit the website here for more details and to cast your vote for development direct.
