Inaugurated in 1993, the La Merced Regional Hospital in Osuna, Seville, has undergone constant changes over the years to adapt to new healthcare needs. Among its rooms, the assembly hall has been waiting patiently for its turn to be renovated, which has finally come at the hands of MJ Arquitectos, led by architects Mercedes Jurado and José Manuel Varo. The total transformation of this space opens a new chapter, adding versatility through the innovative use of materials such as the ultra-compact Dekton stone.
Located on the first floor, overlooking the northern façade of the hospital complex, the assembly hall features a trapezoidal configuration that has remained unchanged since its opening. Originally, the space was defined by a fixed seating arrangement and a speaker’s area, which limited its functionality. MJ Arquitectos’ vision was to modernise the assembly hall, transforming it into a versatile space that could host different events simultaneously.
A versatile hall that can adapt to all needs
The refurbishment focused on two basic premises: the creation of a multi-functional space by means of a movable acoustic partition and the relocation and enlargement of the speaker’s platform. These changes allow the hall to be divided into two separate rooms or to be combined into one complete conference room, thus adapting to the specific needs of each event.
To further enhance the versatility of the space, a decision was made to use non-fixed seating that could be rearranged or removed as required. This adaptable approach was complemented by the use of Cosentino’s Dekton Argentium for the flooring, a choice that the architects felt guaranteed durability and strength, and provided a visually unifying base thanks to its large dimensions and finish.
The ingenious design also extends to the ceiling, which is slightly sloped to create a sense of space, but also to improve the room’s acoustics. This is reinforced by the selection of absorbent materials and neutral tones, creating an atmosphere conducive to concentration and the exchange of ideas.
