Drawing inspiration from the marine world and the shapes of coral reefs, the exclusive Cape Royale development consists of several towers with organic and dynamic façades and 302 luxury homes inside. Located on the island of Sentosa Cove in Singapore, it fits in with the tropical and idyllic environment of the area. In this context, the architectural firm 2nd Edition was commissioned to improve the design of some key areas of the development: the entrance and reception area, the assembly hall and the four existing changing rooms.

‘The biggest challenge we faced was the reception area. We had to come up with a design idea that would elevate the reception experience and adapt contextually to the architecture of the blocks, introducing new materials that would blend in with the environment,’ explains the studio. Another challenge was meeting the deadlines, as they had a tight three-month schedule to develop the concept, procure the materials, define the construction details and install everything on site. The solution to all this was Dekton.

New layers of light and texture

‘We were looking for an exterior wall cladding material with an off-white stone look and, secondly, a large panel format with a technically simple fixing system and minimal surface maintenance,’ explains 2nd Edition. Knowing the background of Cosentino’s sales and technical support teams, they did not hesitate to choose Dekton as the star material for the entrance and reception area.

From the range of colours available, ‘Liquid Sky was chosen for its distinctive swirling, marbled, cloud-like pattern on a white base with flowing grey veins, as it matched perfectly the existing pixel grey granite floor and the white canopy above it,’ they report.

The challenges of the project

Dekton was very helpful in meeting the deadlines, as the slabs were cut in record time. ‘Furthermore, we value Cosentino’s guarantee of safety in the method of installing the slabs on a 4.5 metre high wall,’ they say. ‘Thanks to Cosentino’s help, our team understood that specific drill holes were required to drill Dekton and install the fixing system. Only two of these drilling tools are available for projects in Southeast Asia,’ they assert.

The hidden mechanical fixing demanded great precision and the challenge of installing a panel in a 4.5 m high wall on the existing wall surface, which is neither straight nor uniform, with many different site dimensions and constraints to handle large slabs, which added another difficulty to the project.

Luxury sauna, changing rooms and barbecue

Inside the development, the same team of architects refurbished the changing rooms and sauna, also relying on Dekton to create a look of luxury and class. The washbasin countertops in the changing rooms were clad in Helena and Tundra, two very stylish colours. Inspired by the natural stone Onyx, Helena is a rich colour that give a sense of spaciousness and brightness to spaces with its white and grey tones and delicate distressed texture. On the other hand, Tundra brings the beauty of marble in a soft grey tone on a white background.

In the outdoor common areas, Dekton stands out in the barbecue, not only for its appearance but also for its good technical features that make it a material resistant to extreme temperatures and daily wear and tear. Here, the colour Keon was chosen, which brings an industrial and modern touch to this living space.
