Comfort, efficiency, functionality and optimisation are the four principles underpinning this project by Rez Estudio. In this case, the challenge was to meet these goals in the renovation of an old flat that needed to adapt to a contemporary lifestyle by maximising the usable space of an outdated and highly compartmentalised layout, transforming the old pathways into liveable spaces.
To achieve this, the team opened up the daytime spaces, positioning them in front of the balconies to encourage natural light, and selected durable materials to facilitate daily life, along with colours that conveyed both calmness and modernity. 'The material language is based on a soft colour palette of muted pinks and greens that interact with natural wood, microcement and black lacquered metal elements. The result is a serene and graphic atmosphere, balancing warmth, sobriety and a touch of contemporary tactility,' explain the studio.
In line with their pursuit of comfort, efficiency, functionality and optimisation, Rez Estudio chose Dekton surfaces over other materials. 'Porcelain, laminates and stone surfaces were considered. Porcelain was ruled out due to the difficulty of achieving edges and machining with the same visual continuity. Laminates were dismissed for their lower thermal resistance and sensitivity to water. Natural stone was excluded due to its porosity and absorption, especially in domestic washbasin areas,' the professionals recall.
Ultimately, the material was used in both the kitchen and bathrooms. 'The installation included machining for the sink, hob, taps and basins, with straight edges and integrated basins. The supplier carried out the work without any issues, allowing for very controlled tolerances and joints, especially in the en-suite washbasin where the material behaves as a volume,' add Rez Estudio.
The right neutral tones
In the kitchen, Dekton Nebbia covers both the worktop and splashbacks, creating a continuous volume in a neutral tone that visually connects with the microcement floor and joinery. 'In this choice, resistance to stains, heat and scratches was prioritised, but the colour and texture were crucial to ensure the work surface did not disrupt the spatial flow,' explain the professionals.
In the children's bathroom, a restrained appearance was also sought, so Dekton Nebbia was chosen again: 'The basin is located outside the bathroom area, and we wanted to avoid the space looking like a bathroom as it is visible from common areas,' explain Rez Estudio. 'This required the material to convey cleanliness and neutrality without typical bathroom codes,' they add.
Finally, in the case of the en-suite bathroom, a slightly more striking pattern was chosen, while still matching the microcement palette: 'We created a complete washbasin in Dekton Ava KC with greater texture, adding material richness within a neutral palette,' recall the studio.
Maximum resistance
In the bathroom, as in the kitchen, colour was not the only consideration: 'It was essential for the material to resist water and daily use without losing chromatic continuity,' state Rez Estudio, who believe they achieved their goal with the ultra-compact surface.
'Dekton is a technically advanced, stable surface, resistant to daily use and allowing precise machining without compromising its appearance. Its visual elasticity —neither overly technical nor overly warm— makes it versatile for residential projects. Using it has allowed us to combine intensive domestic use with a visually calm atmosphere. Chromatic stability, heat resistance and low absorption have been key to integrating work surfaces in wet areas without compromising the project's design language. Additionally, its low porosity and stain resistance simplify daily cleaning and ensure the material maintains a homogeneous appearance over time without the need for special treatments,' conclude the studio.
