Open-plan Opulence in Dekton’s Opera

When asked to create a sophisticated, timeless kitchen for a brand-new home in New Plymouth, Annika Rowson knew Dekton Opera by Cosentino would be the perfect surface. 

“My clients love a classic and timeless look,” explains Rowson, founder of Rowson Kitchens. “Opera works so well with their black, white and grey palette and it looks so glamorous.”

The durable Dekton colour, with its grey veining inspired by Italian marble, became one of the signature surfaces throughout the house. Not only is it found within the stunning double-height kitchen — it is also in the luxurious bathrooms, the discrete scullery and the home’s lovely laundry. Opera also features over the gorgeous staircase which has been custom-designed by Refine Architecture and manufactured by Spark Metal Fabrication.

“I chose Dekton for its durability and heatproof characteristics and I love both the elegance and the cohesion of this application in these spaces,” says Rowson. “With its gentle yet elegant vein, it contrasts with the black oak veneer and the cedar cladding in the space and that palette allows the Dekton-clad island to stand out and creates a luxe aesthetic.”

In addition to Dekton’s exceptional performance attributes, it’s important to note that it is also made using 100% renewable electric energy, 99% recycled water and is carbon neutral from cradle to grave. This makes Dekton a beautiful, reliable and environmentally friendly choice for home owners. 

Rowson designed the kitchen’s mitred, waterfall island to be more than three metres long, which is possible because of the large format the surface is fabricated in. The island’s drawer fronts feature Opera in 4mm for a sleek, integrated profile. Double-height sheer curtains, polished concrete floors and a hand-blown spiral lighting feature atop the island add drama to the space. 

In the scullery, every detail has been considered, right down to a custom-made recessed kitchen drainer also fabricated in Opera. In the laundry, main bathroom and ensuite, the Opera story continues across the benching and splashbacks for continuity.

But it’s the incredible custom-made staircase from the ground to first floor, with floating stairs, framed by a black metal balustrade, that makes the most impact. Thanks to Dekton’s hard-wearing, stain- and scratch-resistant properties, and its 25-year warranty, the surface is perfect for an area with heavy traffic.
