The Durability of Dekton in a New Kitchen Design

It was durability that led Sarah Pickersgill-Brown to Dekton by Cosentino. The mum of two was building a new home from the ground up in Mapua, Nelson and wanted a refined, chic kitchen that was highly functional too. The surfaces had to be able to stand up to two young boys and their rough and tumble for many years.
“I had to be practical,” says Pickersgill-Brown, who worked with Jason Anderson and Mel Barlow on the house design. “My boys are so rough, I knew that marble would mark up in two seconds and I’d be stressed and crying looking at the scratches and chips. Dekton was the perfect choice to achieve the natural texture of stone I love so much, and Sabbia was the perfect creamy, textured option with its crossvein, travertine look.”
Sabbia from the Pietra Kode range, in 12mm thickness, was specified for the kitchen splashbacks, benchtops, bar back and a stunning waterfall island that is the centrepiece of the home.
“I adore the warm creamy tones within the textural pattern and the solid design we choose for the island bench,” explains Sarah. “It contrasts perfectly with the fine depth of the benchtop on the back wall. The vibe is inviting and homely, with a hint of high-end luxe.”
With its heat-, stain- and scratch-resistance, and low-maintenance properties, Dekton only needs a wipe with soap and water to stay clean and like-new. The carbon-neutral, ultracompact porcelain fits perfectly with the family’s busy lifestyle.
“It’s known for its durability, heat resistance, and low maintenance,” says Sarah of the range. “It’s an amazing product. Designing our kitchen within our available budget was definitely the most stressful and overwhelming part of our new build. One thing that I absolutely aced though was the selection of our Sabbia. The island bench and countertops are the star of the show and look as pristine as the day they went in.”
