The pandemic has changed the way we view our home and what it means to us with a renewed interest in creating a more beautiful and functional home that also promotes wellness. Last night, we sat down with Lawrence Puah, founder and design director of akiHAUS Design Studio to pick his brain on some strategic home design ideas for an effortless and chic makeover for the festive season.

With almost 20 years of experience, Lawrence shared his take on some of the industry’s most burning questions. Here are some of his responses.

What are my options for creating an inspiring space if it's not my forever home?

An often-neglected fact is that many people rent. He shared that one of the easiest hacks for an instant home makeover is by playing with lighting. Be it decorative lamps or even something as simple as candles to set the mood and infuse a sense of coziness, these are simple ways to add personality to your living space without making permanent changes and breaking the bank.

How to choose the right furniture, especially for small spaces?

Go BIG.

Think daybeds, area rugs, recliner sofas and big pendant lamps. Though this sounds counter-intuitive, but it works in many of his projects with space constraints. His tip is to challenge norms and go bold instead of accepting norms when designing smaller spaces such as choosing only light palettes or picking small furniture.

How to get the most value with customised furniture?

Play with surfaces of different textures and patterns, but belonging to the same colour family to form a harmonious whole when put together. “This is where Cosentino shines, as the possibilities are endless with the different designs, colours and textures the brand offers”, Lawrence shares.

Tips for an effortlessly chic Christmas decor

With Christmas fast approaching, we are all excited to plan our first post-pandemic festive hosting with our friends and family. Here are fool-proof design recipes to give your house a fresh new look!

• Play around with soft furnishings to tie the look together. Changing out fabrics such as cushions and curtains with Christmas elements. Think red, green, gold, and even glitter!
• Incorporate textures. Add some throws and blankets, scatter tea lights and fairy lights to create a whimsical and cozy atmosphere.
• Engage other senses beyond the visual. Scents like pine, cranberry, cinnamon and apple pie reminds us of Christmas and will evoke memories while enhancing the sensory experience.
• And of course.. the quintessential Christmas Tree to get into the spirit of the festive season!
