The ideal colour palette for the urban environments of the future

Cities not only set the pace of our lives, but also inspire the way we design and inhabit our spaces. In a context where urbanity becomes synonymous with dynamism, creativity, and resilience, a colour palette emerges that captures this vibrant energy and transforms it into designs full of character.

This is the essence of the Urban macrotrend, presented by Cosentino in its latest Trend Report: Shaping Tomorrow. Future Design & Architecture 2025–2026. It explores how the cities of the future are being designed and how the challenge of creating multifunctional and flexible spaces, adaptable to different activities and generations, is being addressed.

A palette designed for urban environments

More than a trend, Urban is an attitude. It reflects a large part of the population living in constant motion, facing challenges such as climate change, overstimulation, and limited living space. This macrotrend gives rise to resilient, cosmopolitan spaces where past and future, heritage and innovation blend seamlessly.

Within this trend, the study identifies a bold and vibrant colour palette. Primary colours are softened into desaturated tones bordering on neutrals, creating calm and harmony. Cooler tones, such as soft blues and greens, dominate personal spaces to encourage relaxation, while warmer tones are reserved for communal areas to foster connection and conversation. This thoughtful approach to materials and design creates sustainable, adaptable environments deeply aligned with human needs and the planet's changing demands.

The five colours of this palette represent the new resilient cities being built today:

  • Legacy: A medium red that exudes an air of international appeal, evoking a sense of security and protection. This dynamic tone conveys strength and energy, making it a compelling choice as a bold accent or standout colour.
  • Matter: This warm grey represents the selection of sustainable and durable materials for our future regenerative cities. Its name refers to all matter that is recyclable and cyclical.
  • Bauhaus: A classic blue that evokes one of the most important art and design movements of this century. This pale version allows for broader and timeless application.
  • Energy: Striking and full of vitality, this bright yellow represents renewable and innovative energy sources while adding brightness to this palette.
  • Mutable: The concept of flexibility and modularity is embedded in this deep purple tone, while adding a touch of exclusivity and luxury.

On average, each person uses about 144 litres of water per day, 20% of which is spent in the kitchen. By making small changes to our daily routines, we can save around 21,000 litres per year in a house with four people or, in other words, the equivalent of a family swimming pool.

Trevi / Pietra Edition / Dekton: Its creamy base, marked by a parallel pattern of irregular veins in grey and blue tones, is inspired by the classic beauty of Roman silver travertine, one of the stones that defined the architecture of the Eternal City and today adds personality to interior design and architectural projects with contemporary lines. Its timeless appearance enhances the longevity of a space, embracing the concept of sustainability.

A conscious design for the cities of the future

Living in the city means facing its fast pace, but also its moments of pause, its hidden beauty among brick walls and traffic lights. The Urban trend captures this complexity and translates it into design. A colour palette that balances neutral tones with others that are more vibrant and full of energy.

With its proposal of surfaces and colours aligned with this vision, Cosentino becomes the best ally for those who want to design sustainable and resilient urban spaces, where the past blends with the future and aesthetics meet functionality.
