A minimalist and contemporary villa in Austria

For many years, contractor Norbert Hartl dreamed of owning a house by the lake Attersee, in Salzkammergut, Austria. A stunning natural setting of turquoise waters that has attracted people throughout the course of history and where settlements can be traced from the Neolithic period to the mansions of the 18th and 19th centuries. This beautiful setting, which was a source of inspiration for artists such as Gustav Klimt and Gustav Mahler, is now home to Norbert Hartl’s new house, which adds a contemporary, minimalist touch to the landscape.

Designed to enjoy the panoramic views from every room, the house blends harmoniously into its surroundings. F2 Architekten won the architectural competition for the construction of this cubic building with horizontal lines and timeless design in which the use of Dekton surfaces, both in the façade and in its interiors, stands out.

Classic design with cutting edge technology

“For this project we were lucky to have a client with a deep affinity for architecture who, with great skill, attention to detail and bold decisions, led us to discover a new material for us: Dekton”, explains architect Christian Frömel from F2 Architekten. This spectacular design project arises from the interpretation of the style of the great masters of modernity, but makes use of a cutting edge material such as Dekton. “Dekton is a blend of 20 natural minerals that are pressed at 25,000 tons pressure and sintered at 1,200°C”, explains Oliver Reiter, Managing Director of Cosentino Austria. “We replicate the metamorphic processes that occur naturally in the formation of stone, which can take millions of years, at an accelerated rate and under controlled conditions. This results in an ultracompact surface for the world of architecture and design with outstanding technical and design features”.

Image of EFHH 41 in A state of the art house on the lake - Cosentino

The advantages of versatility

The many advantages of Dekton, an ultracompact material that is frost and stain resistant and that comes in a wide range of sizes and thicknesses, were decisive in the architects’ choice. “This versatility allowed us to minimise the number of surfaces used: wood, plaster, glass and Dekton”, says Christian Frömel. The ventilated façade and balustrades, the stair treads, the floors of the terraces and the interior of the house, as well as the fireplace and kitchen island are clad in Dekton.

Sandy shades for the interior

For the core of the building and all floor surfaces, the colour chosen was Dekton Danae, a sandy tone that creates a continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. The medium height storage unit housing the television and the two sides of the fireplace are also clad in Dekton, creating a cosy atmosphere. The interior design is the work of Steininger Designers, including the kitchen island, a custom designed monolithic block inspired by an in-house design. The kitchen is clad in Dekton Zenith, a glossy white colour. “Aesthetics is function”, says managing director Martin Steininger, a convinced minimalist. “The fact that the things we surround ourselves with are perfectly manufactured makes them valuable”. This also conveys the philosophy of the owner of the house. “Dekton was truly an inspiration for this heartfelt project”, says Norbert Hartl.

The architectural challenges

With the exception of the interior design, the project was entirely carried out by Schmid Baugruppe, the company of Norbert Hartl, the owner. “Building down to the bare essentials can be very challenging. We put a lot of technical effort into it”, says the foreman and engineer. For the building envelope, the director and architect were inspired by the ventilated curtain façade of the Kap West building in Munich. GIP façade specialists helped design the substructure using Schöck Isolink, without thermal bridging. It was manufactured according to the detailed planning of FSP Metalltechnik, a company of the Schmid Baugruppe. The Dekton slabs, cut at the Cantoria facilities, Almería, were fixed with Keil anchors.

Dekton surfaces were also used for the steel balustrade surrounding the house for privacy purposes, which is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. To integrate them, special hinges were used for the doors of the ramp leading to the main entrance and for the almost invisible balustrade door, which gives access to the lake.

“Its solid materiality for façades, floors and furniture, its robustness and easy maintenance and, additionally, the versatility and precision that make it possible to create stunning architectural and design details, make this material truly unique”.

A refurbishment inspired by fashion

A fashion landmark and meeting point in the city of Tel Aviv, the Ramat Aviv Mall offers a unique shopping experience with a wide range of shops, restaurants and cultural activities. Inside, there are shops of major fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Carolina Herrera or Rolex, which attract large numbers of shoppers every day. Faced with the need to refurbish the floor of the common areas, MYS Architects had the challenge of not altering their special character and, at the same time, minimising the impact on traffic, as the works had to be carried out while regular activity was taking place.

Its original design – created by the same studio and inspired by Galleria Vittorio Emanuel II in Milan – has been fully preserved in the renovation. The sophisticated atmosphere that contextualises the world of fashion and haute couture has been maintained through the use of natural materials in warm tones, such as wood, brass and Dekton, which reproduces the texture and colour of stone.

Classic design with contemporary materials

Among the various architectural elements of the shopping mall are the corridors with curved false ceilings, which provide a geometrical balance. The floor tiles were replaced by large slabs of Dekton Gada, a very natural colour inspired by quartzite, which adds a very elegant touch to the spaces. Domoos graphite black details finish off this refined and sober look. ‘Between the Dekton slabs we integrated brass trims and in the squares we created a special geometric pattern defining the meeting point of the space,’ explains Zehavit Simovitch Liberman, architect at MYS Architects.

Technical advantages

‘In technical terms, the 8 mm Dekton slabs in 144 x 320 cm format were a good solution for a quick glue application on the existing floor,’ says the architect, adding that this made it possible to speed up the work during night-time construction works. ‘The thickness of the Dekton slab, combined with its strength, allowed us to make minimal adaptations between the shops and the public spaces,’ she concludes.

The new skin of the TQ InvestPro building in Girona

In the heart of the city of Girona, the new skin of the TQ InvestPro real estate company’s building transforms the skyline with contemporary touches thanks to its clean design with horizontal lines. Designed by the Arquitecturia studio, the building has a revamped façade that has been clad with Dekton, as well as the outdoor terrace flooring.

The design features large windows that open and close like a book and are concealed when closed, leaving the façade completely opaque and clean in terms of visual appearance.

The ideal material

The choice of Dekton for this ventilated façade was a great technical solution to solve this architectural challenge. The surface proved to be the ideal material after several tests for this type of window with the blacksmith, in addition to ‘the unbeatable conditions we were offered and the excellent treatment and service throughout the process’, the studio explains. The technical properties of this material, which is resistant to temperature changes and stains, make Dekton an optimal surface for outdoor use. Another added value is the aesthetics of the chosen colours, which give a modern and contemporary look. Inspired by the classic cement floors, with a calm movement, Dekton Kreta brings a seamless design in matt texture and grey colour.

An efficient system

The ventilated façade has a Keil system, which conceals the anchors and provides thermal protection, favouring energy saving and, above all, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly building. A construction solution that fits perfectly with Dekton thanks to its lightness and thickness. The result is a simple but efficient and aesthetically powerful construction option.

Common spaces full of design in North Carolina

Among the 250 companies housed on the 2,800-hectare Research Triangle Park corporate campus in North Carolina, a recent project stands out for its innovative use of design to create a space for collaboration, creativity and interaction. Elisa Christopher, from Phillips Architecture design studio, was commissioned for this project in which the company wanted to give a new look to a lobby and staircase area using Dekton by Cosentino.

The client wanted a material that would surprise potential and existing employees and create a striking appearance at first glance. The designer had already worked with Cosentino in the past and thought that it would be the ideal material to add character and elegance to the space. At Cosentino’s industrial park in Almería, Christopher was able to see the product first hand and discover the endless design possibilities that Dekton has to offer. Taking advantage of its technical and aesthetic properties on such a large campus was a challenge for her and she jumped at the chance.

Balanced contemporary aesthetics

The colour selected for this project was Soke, inspired by classic cement floors with realistic veining on a nuanced grey background. The advantage of this material is mainly that, in addition to providing a contemporary aesthetics with a concrete look and feel, it is virtually maintenance free and offers great versatility for different applications. In the case of this project, it was used for interior cladding, the lift surrounds and the main staircase. In the last two applications, it featured a modern lighting design around it.

The final look creates a lot of visual harmony and brings consistency to the design concept. Soke’s simple colour is perfect when combined with other features such as, in this case, the geometric patterned rug and the wood and metal details.

Relaxed spaces with natural materials

The newly built hotel Scandic CPH Strandpark presents itself as a relaxed and welcoming meeting point in an ideal location. Halfway between Oresund, Copenhagen airport and the Danish capital, it offers privileged views and the beautiful backdrop of the local beach. It is the first hotel in the Scandic chain to focus on the brand’s new strategy of targeting a specific new design-loving guest.

Designed by the architecture and design studio Koncept, the project maintains a relaxed and open character in its design and interior design. It combines natural materials, such as Scandinavian wood, rope and rattan, with durable, recycled surfaces to suit the interior design trends of the future. In particular, Dekton and Silestone have been used to add character and functionality to spaces.

Functionality and aesthetics, two added values

‘We chose Silestone mainly because the table tops had to be durable, easy to maintain and clean in the restaurants, lounges, rooms and rooftop bar,’ Vera Arvidsson from Koncept explains. ‘And because it is resistant to heat and the constantly changing Scandinavian weather, Dekton works perfectly in the open kitchen and on the outdoor terraces,’ she continues. All these technical features also have the added value of sustainability, which reinforces the concept of the hotel itself, as the surfaces are made from recycled materials.

Multiple applications

Specifically, light sand-coloured Dekton Danae in matt finish has been used for the kitchen worktops, buffet and outdoor tables. Meanwhile, the coffee tables in the lounges, as well as the tables in the restaurant and skybar, are made of Silestone Coral Clay. Conversely, Silestone Eco Luna 14 – customised for this project and in Polished finish – has been used for the desks in the rooms, the worktops in the bars, the tables in the lounges and the conference room, all custom-designed by Koncept. In keeping with these materials, the window sills in the rooms feature a beautiful natural stone of travertine marble.

A bright flat combined with dark colours in Turkey

The architectural project for this flat in Turkey, designed by Pinar Cagatay Kizil from Pera Design İc Mimarlik, posed an ambitious challenge. The aim was to link two flats of the Kuzu Effect mixed-use building in Ankara. The result is a 105 square metre area with plenty of light that has been balanced by a design with dark colours.

One of the most striking aspects of the project was the creation of a virtual corridor with mirrors and partitions that allows spaces to flow, all aligned on a single façade. ‘The kitchen is the only area where we could not intervene, since the plumbing work had already been completed. We only enlarged the size of the island a little and gave it continuity by using Dekton Radium for the worktop, which is also found in the entrance and corridors of the house,’ the studio explains.

An aesthetically powerful material

This is how the architecture studio defines Dekton Radium – as a ‘striking and functional’ material. In their own words, it was chosen for cladding, flooring and corridors ‘because it is easy to clean, hygienic and has a great visual effect’. Being a high traffic area it was necessary to add a durable material that would give a consistent look and feel, something that is perfectly achieved with Radium. The rusty steel plate look of this colour also offers an aesthetic that blends perfectly with the ochre and brown used in the interior design of this flat.

A great bedroom

In the bedroom, a very exotic and attractive decorative solution was chosen using Prexury next to the headboard. Like an artistic canvas behind the bedside tables, the Prexury Wild Agate colour makes the space sparkle with its conglomerate of semi-precious stones in shades of turquoise and cream. Especially at night, as the pieces are backlit. ‘It is an incredibly elegant solution. The daytime look is very different from the night-time one, but both are striking. After the client approved the use of this colour, the entire design of the space was shaped around these slabs,’ the design studio explains. The result is a very personal and sophisticated space that receives warm, indirect lighting during rest time.

Design with character

This eight storey building, whose façade stands out in the landscape, is situated in the residential neighbourhood Aguas Férreas, in Lugo (Spain). For its design, “one of the basic premises of the developer, Dmanán Viviendas, was to design and execute an environmentally friendly building with an appearance that would stand out from its surroundings”, explains architect Patricia Montes from Aringal SL, the architecture and engineering firm in charge of the project. Therefore, from the very beginning of the project, Aringal’s work focused on combining the client’s objectives with the philosophy of its own company, which is very committed to incorporating sustainability into its projects.

The majestic appearance of the façades and their clean design gives this building a unique character. “The straight forms, terraces, window openings and materials used are its unique features”, says architect Patricia Montes. Two materials were combined in the façades of this building, creating a play of textures: Dekton Edora, a light grey shade with a minimalist look, and Corten steel.

Image of MG 4184 1 scaled 2 in A state of the art house on the lake - Cosentino

The perfect match

“Dekton and Corten steel, a material whose colour changes continuously throughout the oxidation process due to the effect of light and atmospheric conditions, are combined in the façades, giving the building the distinctive final appearance sought by the planners“, says Montes. Both materials form a perfect combination in compliance with the Guía de Colores y Materiales de Galicia (Guide of colours and materials of Galicia). “In this way, they contribute to the proper integration of the building into the landscape and to a better quality of public space”. Dekton’s properties are also perfect to go hand in hand with Corten steel, a material that forms a surface oxide layer that could stain the materials used on the façade. “Something that does not happen with Dekton thanks to its zero porosity, a result of a sintering and ultra-compaction process exclusive to Cosentino”, says Montes.

According to the studio, orientation, views and location were decisive in the design of this unique building which houses a total of 32 flats. “The sunlight and the wide, clear views to the south-east determined the location of the building’s rooms, with the main rooms facing southeast and the sleeping areas facing north-west, opening onto the common space that gives access to the dwellings”. The south-east façade, with large terraces framed by Corten steel volumes running along the façade as an extension of the main rooms of the flats, opens up to the clear views of the valley. Meanwhile, the window openings on the north-west façade, also framed in Corten steel, are designed to optimise the capture of natural light.

A commitment to sustainability

The projects of this architecture firm are characterised by pursuing maximum sustainability and opting for Breeam certification with the aim of reducing the environmental impact on the surroundings. To this end, they apply passive design strategies, minimising the use of resources such as energy or water, and opting for the use of materials with a low environmental impact. “In this sense, the use of Dekton ensures thermal comfort thanks to its technical properties. It is also a material with a low level of VOCs and has an environmental product declaration (EPD)”, concludes Montes.

Spain at the Dubai Expo

Under the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, the 2020 World Expo finally opened its doors in Dubai on 1st October, almost a year later than planned due to the delay caused by the pandemic. The Expo will be attended by more than 200 participants and will run until 31st March 2022. The Spanish Pavilion addresses participation and sustainability as the main axes of its design thanks to the project ‘Personas lugares’ (People places), by the team of Atxu Amann, Andrés Cánovas and Nicolás Maruri (Temperaturas Extremas Arquitectos).

With a surface area of 5,800 m2, the Spanish Pavilion features a large square that integrates a series of conical volumes that stand out in the space like the chimneys of a thermal power plant, providing shade and ventilation thanks to their ventilated façades. For the interior spaces, passive bioclimatic systems have been used to support ventilation and cooling. Additionally, part of its cladding consists of photovoltaic panels and involves the recovery of 90% of the materials used.

Sustainable and versatile materials

Among the materials used in the design of the project, Dekton and Silestone stand out. Cosentino has provided a total of 3,000 m2 of its Dekton ultracompact surface for different uses as well as countertops and bars made from Silestone. Thus, the Spanish Pavilion becomes a real showroom of materials where the great versatility and variety, as well as the alignment with the values and themes of the Expo, are on display. Sustainability, resource efficiency, circular economy and innovation are the keys to Cosentino’s materials.

Large exhibition spaces

The floor of the main exhibition gallery, which houses the spectacular exhibition ‘El bosque de la Inteligencia’ (The Forest of Intelligence), designed in partnership by External Reference (Carmelo Zappulla) and Onionlab (Aleix Fernández), features a large format (155 x 140 cm) floor in Dekton Radium (700 m2), from the Industrial series. Radium, a colour with the appearance of rusted, acid-degraded steel plate, offers a design that blends perfectly with the ochre and brown shades of the creative proposal. The blue green forest stands out and welcomes visitors to this space whose theme is in line with the sustainable production of Radium, which incorporates up to 80% recycled materials in its composition.

Meanwhile, the stunning Dekton Halo Xgloss finish shines on the floor of the foyer, another of the iconic elements of this Pavilion, which hosts the art installation ‘Dinamo’, created by Daniel Canogar in collaboration with the composer Francisco López.

“The ability of historical architecture to connect with our times and to effectively resolve issues based on climate buffering and representation is one of the keys to the project”.

Dekton, the star of the flooring

The wall and floor cladding of the bathrooms, foyers and kitchen in the Basement Floor, are made of 4 mm thick Dekton slabs in Kreta colour. Meanwhile, the elegant graphite black shade of Dekton Domoos has been used on the exit ramp of the Pavilion, in combination with Dekton Zenith on the ventilated façade, which features vinyl prints representing the main themes of the Pavilion.

Finally, the flooring of the Main Restaurant on the first floor is made of Dekton Arga, from the Stonika series, which brings the sophistication of Taj Mahal quartzite, with a soft cream background crossed by brown and golden veins.

The versatility of Silestone in the restaurant area

As for Silestone, it displays all its beauty and performance in the main restaurant areas of the Pavilion. The iconic Silestone Blanco Zeus is the star of two spaces located on the first floor, the Main Restaurant, where it has been used for the bars and islands, and the Tapas Bar. Additionally, Silestone Eternal Charcoal Soapstone has been used on the counter of the restaurant area, La Gran Barra, as well as on the bathroom countertop of the Main Restaurant.

Quality for a high traffic area in Lisbon

With hundreds of people visiting one of the largest shopping centres in Portugal, the materials used in the flooring are paramount to ensure the durability of the design. That is the key to this project: a resistant and durable material such as Dekton that meets the needs in terms of design and functionality at one of the entrances of the Dolce Vita Amadora Shopping Centre, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Two architects from Broadway Malyan, one Spanish and one Portuguese, teamed up to design this high traffic area with open spaces exposed to the elements, which is located at one of the entrances to the shopping centre. The availability of Dekton in large format slabs made it the perfect material to create a seamless and expansive space to welcome visitors.

Large format

The colours chosen for the project, based on a neutral palette, enhance the sense of cleanliness and spaciousness in this high traffic area. Specifically, the colours chosen were Blanc Concrete, Vegha and Keon in large format slabs -some of them up to 3.20 x 1.40 m- and with a thickness of 12 mm. Thanks to its availability in large format slabs, Dekton is the perfect solution for designing large surface areas, minimising the number of joints and providing a more welcoming and functional design.

Three colours in harmony

While Blanc Concrete, an aged white with small veins in light grey and beige, adds luminosity, Vegha (from the Natural Collection) brings a natural feel with its textures inspired by limestone and sandstone. Finally, the light toned and bright Dekton Keon adds the finishing touch to the interplay of colours.
