A five-star resort surrounded by sand dunes interspersed with coastal vegetation and an exclusive view over the Atlantic Ocean and the Óbidos lagoon. That is West Cliffs, a hotel, golf course and residential complex all in one, located in one of the most unexplored and exclusive areas of Portugal, the Silver Coast.

Located just one hour from Lisbon airport and yet in a natural setting, the complex has been designed to ensure balance between the built and natural environment. As such, its design concept is completely in harmony with the patterns of nature, which, according to its developers, functions almost as a natural extension of the unique landscape of this region.

The architectural firm Sua Kay, led by the renowned Mario Sua Kay (who has designed major projects for shopping centres, banks, stadiums and high-tech industrial complexes), was responsible for the design of the innovative houses for the West Cliffs project. Each house has its own style, halfway between pure contemporaneity, with glass claddings and cubic shapes, and a sort of new Portuguese tradition, with façades featuring local stone and shapes reminiscent of the typical houses of Óbidos.

Sustainability and high durability, key features for the masterminds behind the project

If there is one thing the whole complex has in common, it is the highest certification in terms of sustainability. In fact, Sua Kay believes that this aspect should go further, revolving around not only energy efficiency, but also the quality of the construction and the materials used. “It gives me great pleasure to return to the buildings I built more than twenty years ago and find them in the same condition in which they were delivered to the client”, he says.

All this has led the studio to choose Dekton and Silestone (carbon neutral products throughout their life cycle with a 25-year warranty) for this project, as we will see in one of its most recently completed homes, which we will explore below.

The beauty and size of the pieces, key to the choice of Dekton and Silestone

“There are several reasons why we chose to use Dekton for this project. Among them are the beauty and size of the pieces, which create unique spaces. This is the case, for example, with the master suite, which features a bathtub, shower and sauna and which we wanted to convey a spa-like feel”.

According to the studio, this was achieved thanks to the large Dekton Kira slabs, which were used for the floor, walls and shower. Inspired by natural stone, Dekton Kira is reminiscent of Gris Pulpis for its elegance and versatility. This colour features a background in earth tones crossed by delicate light grey veins running naturally across the surface. All this, combined with its soft matt texture, gives it a timeless feel.

For the washbasin, the studio chose Silestone’s Ariel model in Coral Clay, a colour reminiscent of cappuccino cream. “In this way we created a unique look, which combines with the wood used for the roof and the glass of the façade, which overlooks a private courtyard, contributing to a calm and relaxing atmosphere”, the studio says.

A range of colours perfect to achieve groundbreaking visual effects

“The same concept was used for the other sanitary rooms, but as they were less spacious, Dekton Opera was used to ‘enlarge’ them”, the studio further says. In this case, they allude to the refined colour inspired by the elegant Italian Carrara marble. Its creamy white background is crossed by a simple light grey veining that adds depth and character, while its classic finish offers a sensationally soft and velvety feel.

The Marie washbasin was used in another bathroom. The colour chosen was Silestone Cemento Spa, a dark grey that gives an industrial, modern and innovative touch by emulating the finish, tone and roughness of cement. This provides a relaxing and innovative contrast with the wooden furniture, creating an elegant and exclusive atmosphere throughout the house.

Last but not least, for the kitchen, the studio took up the idea of contrast with wood and chose Dekton Radium for the island, worktops and claddings. “We wanted a stronger colour palette, contrasting with the cabinets and the roughness of the stone. The durability of Dekton in everyday kitchen use was decisive in our choice, as it ensured that it would not scratch or stain with normal use”, the studio concludes.

“We were looking for a mix of wood, stone and ceramics to give the house a Mediterranean touch”, say the owners of this modern house in Vera (Almería, Spain). After buying the plot in 2012, it was not until 2021 that this couple with children decided to start building their 250-metre home (plus basement), planning the project requirements together with the architect. They chose the finishes and decoration themselves.

“The house has Dekton everywhere”, they say. “It is a very clean, non-porous material, which is great now that we have a puppy. We don’t have to worry about what might be left behind, as is the case with marble! Besides, we love its wide range of colours”.

Indoor-outdoor connection thanks to a very versatile flooring

All the floors feature Dekton Lunar, a reinterpretation of conventional cement inspired by industrial design with an off-white background that makes it very trendy. The outdoor flooring is also made of the same material, creating an indoor-outdoor continuity which is very much on trend.

The terrace features a combination of Lunar and Soke, a colour also inspired by classic cement flooring with a realistic veining in an attractive range of greys and which was used for the large table and outdoor shower tray. The same colour scheme is used for the swimming pool, clad in Lunar, while its fountain features Soke.

An eye-catching kitchen featuring Dekton Bergen

Inside the house, the elegant kitchen with an island in Dekton Bergen, a colour inspired by natural Portobello stone, stands out. The beauty of its greyish veins, with sculptural pattern on a whitish background with delicate filigree, makes it a trendy design full of character and elegance.

In addition, the island has an office area also in Dekton. Specifically, the colour chosen was Micron, a dark gradient on a black background. A timeless design reminiscent of the most outstanding microcements on the market.

Four bathrooms with distinctive character thanks to Dekton

The ultra-compact surface, which is available in an endless range of designs and colours, also plays a major role in the bathrooms. For the hall bathroom they chose Dekton Laos, a dark, weathered colour with a very contemporary soft matt finish.

“We saw this colour in the Almería showroom. It was outdoors and, as we got closer, the indirect light on its surface reminded us of our honeymoon in Vietnam and Cambodia”, says the couple. Following this inspiration, they designed a bathroom with Asian touches.

There are three other bathrooms in the house. The first is next to their son’s bedroom and is clad in Dekton Vera, “in honour of the place where we live”, in the words of the owners. Its cement background makes it a fusion between the natural and the industrial, while its pale veining break with conventional colours and brings an innate delicacy.

For their daughters’ bathroom they chose Dekton Entzo, a flagship colour inspired by Calacatta Gold marble. This colour is well known for the realism and naturalness of the random pattern of its golden veins.

Last but not least, the couple’s bathroom is clad in Dekton Opera, a colour inspired by fine Italian Carrara marble. In addition, the new Dekton Velvet Texture gives it a velvety finish that is sensational to the touch.

“We love Cosentino products”, say the owners of this spectacular house. “Recently, we have even used Dekton to clad an aluminium shed near the swimming pool and it has turned out beautifully”.

The best oil mill in Spain prepares to welcome visitors with Dekton

Made from Picual olives and produced in an old olive mill located in the town of Ventas de Huelma, in 2021 Omed olive oil was awarded the Spanish Food Award for the Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil by the Ministry of Agriculture. Although it was in 2021 when all the media attention turned to this little town in Granada, the truth is that Omed had already received this award -the most prestigious in the world of olive oil in Spain- in 2017.

With an 18-year track record of success, including exporting 90% of its production, the next step was obvious for the García Casas brothers, the minds behind Omed: to turn the Las Mercedes oil mill, where their exceptional oil is produced, into a place of pilgrimage for lovers of the so-called ‘liquid gold’.

For this purpose they contacted GANA Arquitectura, a renowned Málaga-based studio with some of their buildings nominated as the best of the year and who have worked with well-known brands. The goal? The refurbishment and extension of the old mill into a completely renovated industrial and corporate building. “It was an ambitious challenge aimed at improving the existing processes at the factory and, at the same time, positioning this gastronomic benchmark on the international olive oil tourism scene”, the studio says.

“Professional, clean and honest” indoor (and outdoor) spaces thanks to Dekton

“As a place that can be visited, it was essential to create well-designed and well-finished spaces that conveyed an image of professionalism, cleanliness and honesty, in line with their product. It is a leap in quality that has been achieved thanks to the use of natural light, its ample spaces and the use of quality materials”, the studio further says.

Dekton was the material of choice for the flooring (in and outside), giving the whole an industrial and elegant touch. Specifically, the colours chosen were Lunar (a trendy reinterpretation of conventional cement with an off-white hue), Kreta (a grey shade with a matt texture inspired by traditional cement floors that evokes a sense of serenity), Sasea (a creamy-grey tone with a design full of details and reminiscent of Sahel limestone) and Strato (a realistic reproduction of a cement surface).

Dekton, the perfect choice for high-traffic areas

In addition to the flooring, GANA Arquitectura also used Dekton Lunar for the stairs and landings. The studio also opted for this innovative material for the counters, bars and tables used in different colours such as Laurent (in the showcooking bar and the tasting table) or Trilium (in the store counter) and also in the exterior. There, the terrace bar is made with Dekton Kreta, a color inspired by concrete surfaces. The architectural firm also relied on Cosentino for the natural stones, as in the top of the meeting table, made of Scalea Rain Forest Green marble, or the terrace counter, in Scalea Roma Imperial marble.

Cosentino’s innovative, ultra-compact and high performance surface was chosen not only for its stylish design, but also for its outstanding scratch, stain, fire and heat resistance properties. It is also very easy to maintain, a feature that is especially important in high traffic areas such as Omed’s facilities: all you need is a wipe with a damp cloth and neutral soap and it will be as good as new.

A minimalist and contemporary villa in Austria

For many years, contractor Norbert Hartl dreamed of owning a house by the lake Attersee, in Salzkammergut, Austria. A stunning natural setting of turquoise waters that has attracted people throughout the course of history and where settlements can be traced from the Neolithic period to the mansions of the 18th and 19th centuries. This beautiful setting, which was a source of inspiration for artists such as Gustav Klimt and Gustav Mahler, is now home to Norbert Hartl’s new house, which adds a contemporary, minimalist touch to the landscape.

Designed to enjoy the panoramic views from every room, the house blends harmoniously into its surroundings. F2 Architekten won the architectural competition for the construction of this cubic building with horizontal lines and timeless design in which the use of Dekton surfaces, both in the façade and in its interiors, stands out.

Classic design with cutting edge technology

“For this project we were lucky to have a client with a deep affinity for architecture who, with great skill, attention to detail and bold decisions, led us to discover a new material for us: Dekton”, explains architect Christian Frömel from F2 Architekten. This spectacular design project arises from the interpretation of the style of the great masters of modernity, but makes use of a cutting edge material such as Dekton. “Dekton is a blend of 20 natural minerals that are pressed at 25,000 tons pressure and sintered at 1,200°C”, explains Oliver Reiter, Managing Director of Cosentino Austria. “We replicate the metamorphic processes that occur naturally in the formation of stone, which can take millions of years, at an accelerated rate and under controlled conditions. This results in an ultracompact surface for the world of architecture and design with outstanding technical and design features”.

Image of EFHH 41 in A state of the art house on the lake - Cosentino

The advantages of versatility

The many advantages of Dekton, an ultracompact material that is frost and stain resistant and that comes in a wide range of sizes and thicknesses, were decisive in the architects’ choice. “This versatility allowed us to minimise the number of surfaces used: wood, plaster, glass and Dekton”, says Christian Frömel. The ventilated façade and balustrades, the stair treads, the floors of the terraces and the interior of the house, as well as the fireplace and kitchen island are clad in Dekton.

Sandy shades for the interior

For the core of the building and all floor surfaces, the colour chosen was Dekton Danae, a sandy tone that creates a continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. The medium height storage unit housing the television and the two sides of the fireplace are also clad in Dekton, creating a cosy atmosphere. The interior design is the work of Steininger Designers, including the kitchen island, a custom designed monolithic block inspired by an in-house design. The kitchen is clad in Dekton Zenith, a glossy white colour. “Aesthetics is function”, says managing director Martin Steininger, a convinced minimalist. “The fact that the things we surround ourselves with are perfectly manufactured makes them valuable”. This also conveys the philosophy of the owner of the house. “Dekton was truly an inspiration for this heartfelt project”, says Norbert Hartl.

The architectural challenges

With the exception of the interior design, the project was entirely carried out by Schmid Baugruppe, the company of Norbert Hartl, the owner. “Building down to the bare essentials can be very challenging. We put a lot of technical effort into it”, says the foreman and engineer. For the building envelope, the director and architect were inspired by the ventilated curtain façade of the Kap West building in Munich. GIP façade specialists helped design the substructure using Schöck Isolink, without thermal bridging. It was manufactured according to the detailed planning of FSP Metalltechnik, a company of the Schmid Baugruppe. The Dekton slabs, cut at the Cantoria facilities, Almería, were fixed with Keil anchors.

Dekton surfaces were also used for the steel balustrade surrounding the house for privacy purposes, which is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. To integrate them, special hinges were used for the doors of the ramp leading to the main entrance and for the almost invisible balustrade door, which gives access to the lake.

“Its solid materiality for façades, floors and furniture, its robustness and easy maintenance and, additionally, the versatility and precision that make it possible to create stunning architectural and design details, make this material truly unique”.

A refurbishment inspired by fashion

A fashion landmark and meeting point in the city of Tel Aviv, the Ramat Aviv Mall offers a unique shopping experience with a wide range of shops, restaurants and cultural activities. Inside, there are shops of major fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Carolina Herrera or Rolex, which attract large numbers of shoppers every day. Faced with the need to refurbish the floor of the common areas, MYS Architects had the challenge of not altering their special character and, at the same time, minimising the impact on traffic, as the works had to be carried out while regular activity was taking place.

Its original design – created by the same studio and inspired by Galleria Vittorio Emanuel II in Milan – has been fully preserved in the renovation. The sophisticated atmosphere that contextualises the world of fashion and haute couture has been maintained through the use of natural materials in warm tones, such as wood, brass and Dekton, which reproduces the texture and colour of stone.

Classic design with contemporary materials

Among the various architectural elements of the shopping mall are the corridors with curved false ceilings, which provide a geometrical balance. The floor tiles were replaced by large slabs of Dekton Gada, a very natural colour inspired by quartzite, which adds a very elegant touch to the spaces. Domoos graphite black details finish off this refined and sober look. ‘Between the Dekton slabs we integrated brass trims and in the squares we created a special geometric pattern defining the meeting point of the space,’ explains Zehavit Simovitch Liberman, architect at MYS Architects.

Technical advantages

‘In technical terms, the 8 mm Dekton slabs in 144 x 320 cm format were a good solution for a quick glue application on the existing floor,’ says the architect, adding that this made it possible to speed up the work during night-time construction works. ‘The thickness of the Dekton slab, combined with its strength, allowed us to make minimal adaptations between the shops and the public spaces,’ she concludes.

Common spaces full of design in North Carolina

Among the 250 companies housed on the 2,800-hectare Research Triangle Park corporate campus in North Carolina, a recent project stands out for its innovative use of design to create a space for collaboration, creativity and interaction. Elisa Christopher, from Phillips Architecture design studio, was commissioned for this project in which the company wanted to give a new look to a lobby and staircase area using Dekton by Cosentino.

The client wanted a material that would surprise potential and existing employees and create a striking appearance at first glance. The designer had already worked with Cosentino in the past and thought that it would be the ideal material to add character and elegance to the space. At Cosentino’s industrial park in Almería, Christopher was able to see the product first hand and discover the endless design possibilities that Dekton has to offer. Taking advantage of its technical and aesthetic properties on such a large campus was a challenge for her and she jumped at the chance.

Balanced contemporary aesthetics

The colour selected for this project was Soke, inspired by classic cement floors with realistic veining on a nuanced grey background. The advantage of this material is mainly that, in addition to providing a contemporary aesthetics with a concrete look and feel, it is virtually maintenance free and offers great versatility for different applications. In the case of this project, it was used for interior cladding, the lift surrounds and the main staircase. In the last two applications, it featured a modern lighting design around it.

The final look creates a lot of visual harmony and brings consistency to the design concept. Soke’s simple colour is perfect when combined with other features such as, in this case, the geometric patterned rug and the wood and metal details.

Relaxed spaces with natural materials

The newly built hotel Scandic CPH Strandpark presents itself as a relaxed and welcoming meeting point in an ideal location. Halfway between Oresund, Copenhagen airport and the Danish capital, it offers privileged views and the beautiful backdrop of the local beach. It is the first hotel in the Scandic chain to focus on the brand’s new strategy of targeting a specific new design-loving guest.

Designed by the architecture and design studio Koncept, the project maintains a relaxed and open character in its design and interior design. It combines natural materials, such as Scandinavian wood, rope and rattan, with durable, recycled surfaces to suit the interior design trends of the future. In particular, Dekton and Silestone have been used to add character and functionality to spaces.

Functionality and aesthetics, two added values

‘We chose Silestone mainly because the table tops had to be durable, easy to maintain and clean in the restaurants, lounges, rooms and rooftop bar,’ Vera Arvidsson from Koncept explains. ‘And because it is resistant to heat and the constantly changing Scandinavian weather, Dekton works perfectly in the open kitchen and on the outdoor terraces,’ she continues. All these technical features also have the added value of sustainability, which reinforces the concept of the hotel itself, as the surfaces are made from recycled materials.

Multiple applications

Specifically, light sand-coloured Dekton Danae in matt finish has been used for the kitchen worktops, buffet and outdoor tables. Meanwhile, the coffee tables in the lounges, as well as the tables in the restaurant and skybar, are made of Silestone Coral Clay. Conversely, Silestone Eco Luna 14 – customised for this project and in Polished finish – has been used for the desks in the rooms, the worktops in the bars, the tables in the lounges and the conference room, all custom-designed by Koncept. In keeping with these materials, the window sills in the rooms feature a beautiful natural stone of travertine marble.

A bright flat combined with dark colours in Turkey

The architectural project for this flat in Turkey, designed by Pinar Cagatay Kizil from Pera Design İc Mimarlik, posed an ambitious challenge. The aim was to link two flats of the Kuzu Effect mixed-use building in Ankara. The result is a 105 square metre area with plenty of light that has been balanced by a design with dark colours.

One of the most striking aspects of the project was the creation of a virtual corridor with mirrors and partitions that allows spaces to flow, all aligned on a single façade. ‘The kitchen is the only area where we could not intervene, since the plumbing work had already been completed. We only enlarged the size of the island a little and gave it continuity by using Dekton Radium for the worktop, which is also found in the entrance and corridors of the house,’ the studio explains.

An aesthetically powerful material

This is how the architecture studio defines Dekton Radium – as a ‘striking and functional’ material. In their own words, it was chosen for cladding, flooring and corridors ‘because it is easy to clean, hygienic and has a great visual effect’. Being a high traffic area it was necessary to add a durable material that would give a consistent look and feel, something that is perfectly achieved with Radium. The rusty steel plate look of this colour also offers an aesthetic that blends perfectly with the ochre and brown used in the interior design of this flat.

A great bedroom

In the bedroom, a very exotic and attractive decorative solution was chosen using Prexury next to the headboard. Like an artistic canvas behind the bedside tables, the Prexury Wild Agate colour makes the space sparkle with its conglomerate of semi-precious stones in shades of turquoise and cream. Especially at night, as the pieces are backlit. ‘It is an incredibly elegant solution. The daytime look is very different from the night-time one, but both are striking. After the client approved the use of this colour, the entire design of the space was shaped around these slabs,’ the design studio explains. The result is a very personal and sophisticated space that receives warm, indirect lighting during rest time.

Design with character

This eight storey building, whose façade stands out in the landscape, is situated in the residential neighbourhood Aguas Férreas, in Lugo (Spain). For its design, “one of the basic premises of the developer, Dmanán Viviendas, was to design and execute an environmentally friendly building with an appearance that would stand out from its surroundings”, explains architect Patricia Montes from Aringal SL, the architecture and engineering firm in charge of the project. Therefore, from the very beginning of the project, Aringal’s work focused on combining the client’s objectives with the philosophy of its own company, which is very committed to incorporating sustainability into its projects.

The majestic appearance of the façades and their clean design gives this building a unique character. “The straight forms, terraces, window openings and materials used are its unique features”, says architect Patricia Montes. Two materials were combined in the façades of this building, creating a play of textures: Dekton Edora, a light grey shade with a minimalist look, and Corten steel.

Image of MG 4184 1 scaled 2 in Aguas férreas - Cosentino

The perfect match

“Dekton and Corten steel, a material whose colour changes continuously throughout the oxidation process due to the effect of light and atmospheric conditions, are combined in the façades, giving the building the distinctive final appearance sought by the planners“, says Montes. Both materials form a perfect combination in compliance with the Guía de Colores y Materiales de Galicia (Guide of colours and materials of Galicia). “In this way, they contribute to the proper integration of the building into the landscape and to a better quality of public space”. Dekton’s properties are also perfect to go hand in hand with Corten steel, a material that forms a surface oxide layer that could stain the materials used on the façade. “Something that does not happen with Dekton thanks to its zero porosity, a result of a sintering and ultra-compaction process exclusive to Cosentino”, says Montes.

Stylish shapes

According to the studio, orientation, views and location were decisive in the design of this unique building which houses a total of 32 flats. “The sunlight and the wide, clear views to the south-east determined the location of the building’s rooms, with the main rooms facing southeast and the sleeping areas facing north-west, opening onto the common space that gives access to the dwellings”. The south-east façade, with large terraces framed by Corten steel volumes running along the façade as an extension of the main rooms of the flats, opens up to the clear views of the valley. Meanwhile, the window openings on the north-west façade, also framed in Corten steel, are designed to optimise the capture of natural light.

A commitment to sustainability

The projects of this architecture firm are characterised by pursuing maximum sustainability and opting for Breeam certification with the aim of reducing the environmental impact on the surroundings. To this end, they apply passive design strategies, minimising the use of resources such as energy or water, and opting for the use of materials with a low environmental impact. “In this sense, the use of Dekton ensures thermal comfort thanks to its technical properties. It is also a material with a low level of VOCs and has an environmental product declaration (EPD)”, concludes Montes.
