‘Slow’ architecture for outstanding spaces

31 luxury homes in a private residential area with lovely green surroundings. This is Bishopsgate Residences, a new development in Singapore, ideally located close to the city’s main Orchard Road and business district. Furthermore, the new development features lush gardens, swimming pools, a café and a yoga room.

With the aim of adding a personal touch to the interior of one of the luxury homes in the Bishopsgate complex, a couple decided to contact the firm Arkhilite, which specialises in the creation of ‘slow spaces’, that is to say, ‘slow’ architectural spaces that create a state of well-being in their occupants. Have you ever been in a house so warm and relaxing that you never want to leave? Have you ever sat in a dining room that makes you feel so comfortable that you wish dinner would last longer? Or in a lobby that makes you stand still and want to rest somewhere, because the space is so beautiful that you need a bit of time to take it all in? This is what we mean by Slow Spaces and Slow Places. They are pleasant and rewarding,’ explains the architecture studio.

The Singaporean studio Arkhilite’s desire to bring these subtle yet remarkable qualities, based on the fundamental principles of design, is coupled with a love of craftsmanship and bespoke design.

‘When it comes to finding partners, we try to connect with people who inspire us with their dedication to handicrafts. People who believe in “going slow” and going hard and who, despite mounting challenges, exercise unwavering and tenacious faith in the pursuit of excellence in their work’.

A bespoke table and sideboard with Dekton top

That is exactly what the studio had to do when it came to the dining room of such a house in the Bishopsgate development: start from scratch. ‘We wanted to have a dining table and a sideboard in the same area, and we struggled to find something that would fit perfectly in the space we had designed. In the end, we decided to sketch them ourselves and have them custom-made,’ recalls Arkhilite.

With this in mind, the studio’s professionals came up with a fabulous dining table clad in plywood in the form of an arch, while the sideboard has curved legs in bronze-plated stainless steel, inspired by the movements of dance.

The top of both pieces is made from Cosentino’s ultra-compact Dekton surface. ‘Dekton surfaces are highly resistant to staining and discolouration, which gives us peace of mind as the homeowners receive many guests. As we have designed the pieces of furniture ourselves, we have used the same Dekton colour for both the dining area and the sideboard, so that the design story flows and the worktops complement each other’.

Dekton: endless customisation possibilities

The colour used by these professionals is Kairos, which is likened to one of the whitest and coldest marbles on the market, statuary marble. Elegant fine veins in pale grey stand out against its luminous background.

‘We engineered a double profile with a mitre joint to achieve that flagstone look. In addition to that, we designed beautiful recessed lines into the Dekton surfaces for a luxurious and personalised look,’ the firm recalls. ‘The material turned out to be excellent, and we found it quick and easy both to obtain online and to work with the local team. So far, we are very satisfied with the choice,’ they conclude.

‘The Casa Brasileira Itaim represents a new architectural landmark in the city of São Paulo. The project draws on the masters of modern Brazilian architecture, using elements such as exposed concrete, Y-shaped columns and a ramped entrance. The building features cutting-edge solutions in terms of sustainability, automation, cladding, accessibility and security,’ explain Lucio Engenharia and Omar Maksoud, developers of this innovative residential building in one of the best areas of the city.

But that is not all: the common areas of Casa Brasileira, a building that will be a turning point in the country’s design scene, are designed by the award-winning Jader Almeida. His pieces of furniture can be found in all the rooms, including some designed by him exclusively for the project.

Almeida has also opted for Cosentino products as raw materials for his work. ‘We chose Dekton surfaces for the project because they offer unique technical features that are different from those of other materials, such as high UV and stain resistance and low porosity, as well as excellent durability in high-traffic areas,’ explains Jader Almeida. ‘In addition, the range of colours, textures and finishes presented by Dekton influenced our decision, since this range fitted perfectly with the idea of the project, which brings back the concept of “Brazilian houses” and the value of national architecture,’ continues Almeida.

For instance, Dekton Strato has been used for the flooring of all common areas, as well as for the cladding of the sauna, the ballroom, the bathrooms and the gourmet space. It also served as the main cladding material for the 25-metre long swimming pool. Among the most important reasons for this choice are Dekton’s high UV resistance and colour stability, but also Grip+ technology, a state-of-the-art treatment that provides the ultra-compact surface with non-slip properties, making the bathroom a pleasant and safe space for residents.

Cosentino, Carlos Rossi’s choice for the elegant interiors of Casa Brasileira

Carlos Rossi, the architect behind such high-profile projects as the new luxury terminal at São Paulo airport, has been in charge of the interior design of the first completed unit in this development. To add the finishing touch to these refined spaces, Rossi has also turned to Cosentino products, for example, with the Dekton Strato flooring.

In addition, Dekton Sasea, a colour inspired by the popular Sahel limestone, in cream and grey tones and with a design full of nuances, has been chosen for the floor and wall cladding in the kitchen and the bathroom.

‘Our aim was to bring a contemporary language to the spaces, and the Sasea pattern features a neutral tone that suits all styles and blends in perfectly with the natural oak cladding used in the décor. As a result, it adds even more elegance and allows us to maintain our minimalist style,’ says Rossi.

Another colour that caught the professional’s eye was Dekton Rem, used in the two main bathrooms.  ‘This Dekton colour is also very stylish and fits in the same range of neutral tones that we were looking for, but with an ochre hue that adds dynamism to the space and was completely in keeping with the woodwork we had proposed,’ he explains.

Also in the bathrooms, Rossi used Silestone Royal Reef, a simple beige tone with nuances of grey for the floor, walls and countertops. The architect also worked with Silestone Miami White, which provides the lightness and fluidity of white, for the countertops of other bathrooms designed for the development. Beyond its beauty, versatility and innovation, the material was considered for its sustainability (it is a carbon neutral product throughout its life cycle), a feature it shares with the innovative Casa Brasileira project.

Silestone gives a lot of character to this luxury villa

Designed by Emre Akoğlu, this house is the definition of luxury: spacious rooms, several floors and a large estate with outdoor areas including a swimming pool. The interior design of the house combines a renovated classic style with an eclectic mix of materials and textures. Among them is Silestone by Cosentino, which has been used for the bed frame and headboard in one of the master bedrooms. In addition to the bed, the designer also chose Silestone to clad the bathroom doors, creating a unified design concept that gives the house a lot of character.

The veining of the fabulous Marquina marble for a bed

The versatility of Silestone allowed the designer to create a bespoke bed. The colour chosen was Eternal Marquina: “it was the product that best captured the deep black effect I was looking for when I designed the bed, with its beautiful contrasting white veins”, explains the designer. Inspired by Spanish black Marquina marble, this colour is so powerful that, when used on the bed, it becomes the highlight of the entire room.

Integrity in design

In combination with the bed frame, the bathroom doors also feature small pieces of the same material. Eternal Marquina adorns the door frames and a small central panel, making access to the bathroom majestic. “The aim was to preserve the integrity of the design, for which we used the same material”, says Emre Akoğlu.

Versatile and long lasting

The properties of the material were among the advantages that led the designer to choose this Silestone colour. “Obviously, the durability of the material was important. In addition, its 12 mm thickness allowed me to create the design I was looking for in these applications with a lightweight material”, he further says. Furthermore, Silestone is a hybrid surface composed of minerals and recycled materials which, thanks to its unique and innovative HybriQ+ technology, requires minimal maintenance and makes it resistant to stains and scratches.

Functional yet stylish

“We are Mediterranean. We love sunlight, enjoying terraces and outdoor spaces, friends and family. That was our premise when planning this kitchen, the Brava Kitchen, for Casa Decor 2010”, says interior designer Sara Folch. This commission came from TPC, a kitchen manufacturer and distributor with whom Sara had previously worked. TPC wanted Sara to design their top of the range kitchen, with all the features that any kitchen needs but without compromising on style or elegance.

Warm colours and seasonal vegetables

“The idea I came up with was to make an outdoor kitchen in a very Mediterranean style. It has a surface area of 100 m2 and is set in a porch. It was autumn when we fitted the kitchen, so it was prepared for the colder months”.

Warm colours in shades of sand, olive green and aubergine were chosen to symbolise autumn vegetables and add a touch of colour to the kitchen. “We also designed the furniture cladding, the textures and the layout. Electrical appliances were hidden, just the way I like it, and opened thanks to a motor that made the doors slide”.

Silestone: textured surfaces

We also wanted to create a vegetable garden in the central area of the kitchen. It all depended on the large island. “It measured 6 x 1.6 m and was divided into two areas, a cooking area and a wet area, in addition to the dining space”. Silestone Cygnus15 was the colour chosen by Sara.

“We wanted to try something different from what we had done so far, mainly gloss based, so I chose the matt, textured surface of Silestone. It is also a durable, easy to clean surface. It offers a wonderful range of colours to suit our projects, and the different thicknesses available allow for wall and worktop applications.

Thanks to its properties in terms of hardness and durability, Silestone Cygnus15 was also the surface chosen for the benches, perfectly reflecting the style intended to be conveyed.

Swing-like hanging velvet sofas in the same colour scheme as the rest of the kitchen and placed in front of an electric fireplace from which to observe the kitchen, added a touch of glamour to the project.

Jessica Rantala is the CEO & Co-Founder of Content Corner in Helsinki. Jessica’s home improvement story is a perfect example on how our material Dekton can add new durability, life, and beauty into your home. Here you can see four tabletops, reaching from the kitchen to the bathroom ending up in the living room, replacing old worn-out ones or just added on top of existing furniture to add that extra design.

It all started in the kitchen and the dining area where a fresh glossy marble design in Dekton were chosen to be produced as a new table design. 'We gave our old dining table a new look by replacing its tabletop. We kept the legs from our previous table, which originally belong to my husband’s father and had been in our own family for ten years' Jessica explains, so here one can see the existing under construction saved and reused.

With the dining table Jessica also took the chance of enlarging the size of it: 'Our updated table top is made of Dekton Olimpo and we arranged for it to be made slightly larger than our previous one. I dream of having new table legs attached to the corners of our new table top, but I'm still very pleased with our new dining table as it is now.'

Even if the Dekton Olimpo surface is white, high gloss and beautifully marbled it is still very resistant to scratches, stains, and eve heat from pots and pans. Here the family don’t have to worry about everyday life and stains from coffee, red wine, acids, oils etc. One could even spill nail polish on the top and remove it.

To maximize the use of the full slab (320x144cm) there was also an opening to replace a working space in the bathroom so well needed. An area where worktops are easily damages by the humidity. It is also a room so often forgotten in its design and here the Dekton top really adding a new improved look. Jessica’s comment: 'The wooden countertop in our bathroom had been bothering me for a long time, so we also replaced that with Dekton Olimpo.'

The two first updates in the home led Jessica to also rethink the livingroom where the cloudlike dreamy Dekton Helena was chosen: 'After spending some time enjoying our new dining tabletop and bathroom countertop, we also decided to update our TV-stand. It consists of two low cabinets from IKEA and a Dekton Helena countertop, which we ordered from Ylämaan Graniitti.'

We have now seen some examples of improving existing tops and furniture in the home but Jessica also made a new stunning table for her living room where she describes the idea: 'The coffee table is the centrepiece of the living room. The last part of our design project was to design a completely new coffee table together with design studio Oranen & Turklin. The studio decided that the table should be 1 m x 1 m in size. It has a base made of light-coloured wood and a beautiful white and grey-toned Dekton Helena table top.'

Five works of art and design made with Dekton Slim

In April 2021, Cosentino City Dubai launched an initiative to create the Capsule Collection of furniture and home accessories – the first line of furniture made with limited edition Dekton Slim, in partnership with five leading design houses in the Middle East region. Under the theme ‘Breaking Boundaries’, the collection comprises a rocking chair, a console, a coffee table, a range of low side tables and a series of vases, in which the use of Dekton Slim stands out and enhances both its functional and decorative features.

Renowned designers Nada Debs, Mustafa Khamash, Fadi Sarieddine, Aljoud Lootah and the duo Dana Al Matrook and Newsha Dastaviz, from The Line Concept studio, explored the limits of the material to the maximum in order to design 5 individual works of art in their signature design styles. The Capsule Collection was officially launched in September, after which it was showcased at Downtown Design in November 2021.

Tektonia Tables, by The Line Concept

Soft and organic lines challenge the perception of stone as a hard, cold and sharp material in the Tektonia Tables, created by The Line Concept as a tribute to the origins of the earth. This design integrates fluid organic shapes, symbolising nature. Parts of the tables are slabs sliced to expose layers reminiscent of the earth’s strata and the movement of tectonic plates, while the discreet stone edges exposed in the profile highlight the specific thinness of Dekton Slim. The colours used for these works of art were Dekton Stonika Helena, Bergen and Arga 4 mm thick.

The series includes one large and two small tables that can be displayed side by side or separated to show the layers of stone inside. ‘We hope that the Tektonia Tables will provide a fresh perspective on how cutting-edge materials such as Dekton Slim can be applied in unconventional designs,’ explain the designers from The Line Concept.

Rocco, by Mustafa Khamash

Taking cues from the well-known rocking chairs in the design world, Rocco by Mustafa Khamash is a playful creation executed in the raw quality of Dekton Slim, with no unnecessary additions, finishes or embellishments. It represents Khamash’s vision of how we treat materials, whether for dressing ourselves, for dressing our domestic context and for the aesthetic quest for the abstraction of art. ‘I wanted to create a dynamic object that reflected the rich and vibrant design in this region. Rocco is an extrapolation of the idea that the first chair in human history could have been a stone and Dekton Kelya helped bring the idea to fruition,’ explains the designer.

Image of CosentinoCapsuleCollection110721 NateleeCocks 016 in Cosentino’s Capsule Collection: artistically designed furniture - Cosentino

Talyd, by Aljoud Lootah

Drawing inspiration from the traditional large metal pots used for cooking over an open fire, Talyd is a collection of vases that pays homage to the UAE’s rich culinary culture and the everyday utensils and objects intertwined with the livelihood of the Emiratis of a bygone era.

Meaning legacy in Arabic, Talyd is a modern interpretation of archaeological finds. While the shapes and proportions of the vases are influenced by the original artefacts, they are repurposed as functional objects of curiosity with a minimalist design approach. The designer opted for the colours Kreta, Lunar, Sasea and Laos for these one-off pieces. ‘I was very excited about the idea of exploring the material in a completely new way and creating three-dimensional and functional products,’ points out Aljoud Lootah.

Paper Coffee Table, by Fadi Sarieddine

Paper Coffee Table is a creation that celebrates the thinness of Dekton Slim. Featuring a thin 4 mm exposed edge, the material appears to hover like a table top, a feat of engineering achieved by a system of voluminous solid walnut legs held in place with metal tension rods. The slimness of the slab is visually enhanced by the deliberately voluminous legs. Paper Coffee Table, designed by Fadi Serieddine, owes its elegance to this contrast, as well as to the geometry generated by the structural factors of tension and compression. The striking combinations of materials also play a key role in complementing the morphology of the table, whose top is finished in Dekton Kreta. ‘Paper Coffee Table helped me to explore the features of the material and to look into its new dimensions when applied to furniture,’ comments Fadi Sarieddine.

Carapace Console, by Nada Debs

In line with Nada Debs’ philosophy of creating unusual combinations of materials, this console creates a synergy of opposing elements through a playful geometric composition of natural and industrial elements that fit together seamlessly. Craftsmanship can be found in the precise marquetry using the signature pattern of the houses of the region, hence the name ‘Carapace’ meaning ‘shell’. ‘The aim was to create a synergy between Cosentino’s cutting-edge technology and the intricate craftsmanship of the region,’ explains designer Nada Debs, who chose the colours Kelya, Kreta and Lunar to bring this piece to life.

Garden Table: a playful design reminiscent of the outdoors

The Garden Table transcends the boundaries of the functional design to become an inspiring piece that takes us outdoors through its shape and materials, as if we were in the middle of a lush garden. ‘The Garden Table is inspired by wanting to bring the outdoors into the house, and Cosentino was the perfect partner to make it happen,’ explains its designer, architect Colin Seah. According to Seah, the starting point for this table was in fact the material itself.

‘The Dekton Kraftizen Collection is really inspiring because it evokes such a tactility of being outdoors, of the naturalistic feel of things. You are almost transported to a location that is far from the tight urban, dense bustle that we are so used to,’ assures Seah.

A stucco feel in reddish tones

The colour selected for this specific table, which is currently on display at Cosentino City in Singapore, was Umber, a terracotta shade inspired by the natural pigment bearing its name. Its reddish tone and slight embossing add a lot of warmth to the space. The entire Kraftizen collection, of which the Umber colour is part, is inspired by Venetian stucco and offers minimalist and highly versatile surfaces thanks to its large format slabs. Along with its powerful aesthetics, the sustainability and durability of Dekton, a carbon neutral surface throughout its life cycle, was paramount to the designer. In addition, it is a stain-resistant surface due to its low porosity, requires very little maintenance and is also highly resistant to scratches and the sun’s rays.

An unusual garden table

‘I wanted to design a table that enables you to feel like you are actually in a garden,’ explains the designer, who created a cut-out in the piece to house a large potted plant. ‘We wanted to make the surface look like it was floating,’ says Seah. ‘So there is a very thin edge that we created, we chamfered it so that the heaviness of the base material almost disappears. We also wanted it to be a bit playful. Unlike the typical four-legged table, our intention was to create a certain sense of asymmetry, slightly playful, so there are two legs supporting one corner, while the other part of the table rests solely on a solid stump,’ explains Seah. The result is a lightweight table with a lot of character.

‘The Dekton Kraftizen Collection is really inspiring because it evokes such a tactility of being outdoors, of the naturalistic feel of things’.

High end design for a luxury perfumery

The first Fredrik & Louisa perfumery, specialising in high end cosmetic and perfume brands, was founded in Oslo in 1984 and has since grown to 50 shops spread throughout Norway. One of them, located on the ground floor of the exclusive Steen & Strøm shopping centre, has recently been renovated by the Expedit team of the Wanzl Group, who have come up with a new design in line with the Luxury & Premium concept of the perfumery.

In this way, the shopping experience takes place in a luxurious and exclusive environment, with attention to detail, a distinguishing feature of this retail chain that takes care of every aspect of the shop interior, from light and temperature, to air quality. They all play a crucial role in creating the perfect experience of exclusivity and showcasing attractive products in an exciting and inspiring shop environment.

Dekton, a surface with inspiring designs

The luxury products of the Fredrik & Louisa perfumery in this shopping centre now enjoy a unique setting amidst brick walls, natural wood and surfaces clad in Dekton. Specifically, Dekton Helena with a high gloss finish was used. Helena, a shade inspired by Onyx natural stone, brings dazzling colour and an almost unreal atmosphere. Its rich colour with grey and white tones and a delicate crackle make this material the perfect canvas for displaying luxury products. The concept is also in line with the image of Steen & Strøm, the department store firm that since 1797 has been bringing together attractive brands and designers in its shops, where historic architecture is blended with contemporary and stylish elements.

Highly resistant finishes

“Dekton has the ideal weight, size and design finishes for any shop project”, says Oskar Petterson, Project Manager at Cosentino Scandinavia. Its high stain and scratch resistance make it the perfect partner for spaces that are prone to wear and tear, with high traffic and heavy use. In addition to this, according to Petterson, the availability of large format, 4 mm thick Dekton Slim slabs for all walls and pieces of furniture, which create minimal joints, helps to achieve this unique atmosphere.

“It was crucial for Fredrik & Louisa to find a partner like us, who proactively came up with optimisation ideas and alternative solutions to meet the scheduled implementation plan without delay”.

The third life of a historic hotel in Turku

The most famous and iconic hotel in Turku, Finland, has been built from scratch after dismantling the old building from the 1970s. This large scale project, managed by YIT construction company and designed by Schauman Architects, has resulted in a new, more energy efficient building equipped with modern technologies. But not all is gone. The new Scandic Hamburger Börs hotel retains the essence of the original building in its design. The oldest part of the hotel, protected by Finnish heritage legislation, has been restored, and the new building, built over the extension carried out in the 1970s, maintains a historical dialogue with it.

The hotel’s origins date back to 1894, when the Hamburger Bierhalle restaurant opened its doors. Back then the site was occupied by a two storey stone building dating from the 1830s. Later at the turn of the century it was renovated in an Art Nouveau style that still remains today. Known for her charisma and leadership, hotel founder Wallina Valtin bought the restaurant in 1898, while the hotel began operating in 1904. Valtin sold the Hamburger Börs hotel to the Turku Cooperative Society, who were in charge of the extension project carried out in the 1970s and which gave the hotel a second life. Modernisation of the building began in the late 2010s. At that time, the owner was the insurance company LocalTapiola. However, now it has been acquired by the Scandic hotel chain, which is giving this architectural icon a third life.

A project with a soul

The new building has been designed by Schauman Architects and preserves elements from the early 20th century. Its Más restaurant, located on the ground floor, is accessed through a reception area, a lounge and a spacious foyer. The heated winter garden by the restaurant and the open air terrace next to the rooftop bar complete the common areas. The hotel has 272 rooms and suites in total.

According to Janne Halin of the architecture studio, the project involved a dialogue between several different styles and the main challenge was to adapt the new building to its surrounding architecture. Combining the old with the contemporary while paying homage to the past has been the great challenge of the project.

Quality materials

Among the materials used in the renovation project, the architecture studio chose Silestone for the worktops and tables in the restaurant and the rooms. Eternal Marquina was the colour chosen for the bar counter, a colour that evokes the Nero Marquina marble, bringing elegance and depth to the space and rounding off the Spanish inspired design of this common area of the hotel. The tables in Eternal Noir, another dramatic shade, complete the atmosphere. Silestone surfaces are highly resistant to stains, scratches and are easy to maintain, which makes them the ideal material for spaces like this.

Charming rooms

The hotel’s cosy rooms feature an elegant interior design. From the luxurious suite with beautiful arched windows to the standard rooms, they all offer an atmosphere in which the hotel’s history and contemporary comforts come together. “The interior design of the rooms features a neo-Scandinavian style that uses warmer colours to create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, replacing traditional styles based on light and simple colours”, says interior architect Jaakko Puro.
