The kitchen is the heart of this 157-square metre home in the Redfern suburb of Sydney, Australia, and the family’s favourite place. For this reason, it was clear to Shaun Thodey of Thodey Design Architects that this space had to be perfect and meet all requirements and needs, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality.
Designed with an open-plan concept, the studio opted for light and neutral colours, straight lines and wooden elements, such as the kitchen island seats or the shelves in the few storage areas that were left exposed. All this, together with the high ceilings, creates a perfect sense of visual spaciousness.
It had to be beautiful
No matter how much space you have for your kitchen: the more you use it, the smaller it seems to get. And this was no exception. It was therefore essential to use every available centimetre carefully and even to provide for dual use, if needed. But in light of the special place it was to occupy in the family’s heart and life, it was also important to give it a beautiful design. This was the first determining factor in the choice.
“When it came to choosing a worktop material, we opted for DKTN Taga mainly because of its beautiful appearance, but also for its easy maintenance and heat resistance”, the studio says. “We have used this material in combination with an induction hob, recessing the hob into the work area to create a flush and seamless transition between the two surfaces. If we had used natural stone, it would only have been for its appearance. However, in this case, the choice was also determined by a functional factor. DKTN allows you to cook and place hot pans directly on its surface with the peace of mind of knowing that the material will not crack or be damaged”.
A very versatile material for the bathrooms
The same applies to the bathrooms. These are spaces that will be used intensively and will be exposed to water, humidity, cleaning products and make-up, which often leave stains. Choosing the right surface was therefore key. And what better than choosing DKTN Taga, the same surface used in the kitchen, and thus giving continuity to the project in a very original and aesthetic way.
“We love using DKTN Taga as a material for bathroom vanity tops. Bathrooms are exposed to many aggressive chemicals, from cleaning products to hair dyes and creams, which can leave stains and damage sensitive materials such as natural stone. Using DKTN for the worktop means we never have to worry about ring-marks from shampoo bottles, for example”.
Inspired by Taj Mahal quartzite, DKTN Taga is an interpretation of natural stone adapted to the latest trends that maintains the character of natural stone. Its greyish tones with marble and crystalline veins enhance its natural structure. Its gorgeous gloss and aesthetic quality make this model a premium product. And its combination with wood and microcement, as in this project, undoubtedly provides a striking and sophisticated finish.
