During the renovation of a home in central Auckland for a customer and her two teenage children, designer Micaela Wynne of Yellow Fox was tasked with creating a kitchen that, above all, would be “fabulous”. “The owner of the house was very specific about her passion for cooking and how her existing kitchen made her feel”, says Wynne. “From that conversation, I fully understood the task: to turn her kitchen into a functional, simple and cosy space where she could retreat and spend time”.
Although the house was fairly new, Wynne renovated both the kitchen and three bathrooms. In the kitchen, the wall tiles were removed to expose the original brickwork, while Dekton Radium was used for the new worktop, a splashback and a support.
Looking for a New York atmosphere
“The existing architecture actually determined what we did in the interior spaces”, says Wynne. “The dark steel elements used both inside and outside, in the latter case in combination with red brick, conveyed that New York loft feeling. It is not a style you usually see in Auckland, so I was thrilled that the owner trusted me with the task of highlighting these features rather than shying away from them”.
Dekton Radium, a dark surface reminiscent of rusted steel, was added to this modern and industrial style space, perfectly complementing the red brick thanks to its details in orange. Made from 80% recycled materials and with a thickness of 12 mm, Dekton Radium perfectly met the requirements of a functional kitchen surface.
“Dekton was the obvious choice”, says Wynne of the ultra-compact and completely neutral carbon stone. “In a kitchen that is heavily used by both adults and teenagers, we needed a surface that was extremely durable. It had to be resistant to stains, extreme heat, scratches and UV rays, as there are skylights throughout the kitchen”.
Silestone Nolita to brighten up the bathrooms
In the bathrooms, space was quite limited and the sloping ceilings required light countertops to create a sense of spaciousness. To this end, the neutral-toned Silestone Nolita was the surface of choice and was used in three rooms.
“Silestone is a product highly appreciated by our studio”, says Wynne. “It is a non-porous, easy to maintain product with a beautiful range of colour combinations. And Silestone Nolita features such a beautiful white tone that adds just enough texture and appeal to the bathrooms without being too overwhelming”.
