Five works of art and design made with Dekton Slim

In April 2021, Cosentino City Dubai launched an initiative to create the Capsule Collection of furniture and home accessories – the first line of furniture made with limited edition Dekton Slim, in partnership with five leading design houses in the Middle East region. Under the theme ‘Breaking Boundaries’, the collection comprises a rocking chair, a console, a coffee table, a range of low side tables and a series of vases, in which the use of Dekton Slim stands out and enhances both its functional and decorative features.

Renowned designers Nada Debs, Mustafa Khamash, Fadi Sarieddine, Aljoud Lootah and the duo Dana Al Matrook and Newsha Dastaviz, from The Line Concept studio, explored the limits of the material to the maximum in order to design 5 individual works of art in their signature design styles. The Capsule Collection was officially launched in September, after which it was showcased at Downtown Design in November 2021.

Tektonia Tables, by The Line Concept

Soft and organic lines challenge the perception of stone as a hard, cold and sharp material in the Tektonia Tables, created by The Line Concept as a tribute to the origins of the earth. This design integrates fluid organic shapes, symbolising nature. Parts of the tables are slabs sliced to expose layers reminiscent of the earth’s strata and the movement of tectonic plates, while the discreet stone edges exposed in the profile highlight the specific thinness of Dekton Slim. The colours used for these works of art were Dekton Stonika Helena, Bergen and Arga 4 mm thick.

The series includes one large and two small tables that can be displayed side by side or separated to show the layers of stone inside. ‘We hope that the Tektonia Tables will provide a fresh perspective on how cutting-edge materials such as Dekton Slim can be applied in unconventional designs,’ explain the designers from The Line Concept.

Rocco, by Mustafa Khamash

Taking cues from the well-known rocking chairs in the design world, Rocco by Mustafa Khamash is a playful creation executed in the raw quality of Dekton Slim, with no unnecessary additions, finishes or embellishments. It represents Khamash’s vision of how we treat materials, whether for dressing ourselves, for dressing our domestic context and for the aesthetic quest for the abstraction of art. ‘I wanted to create a dynamic object that reflected the rich and vibrant design in this region. Rocco is an extrapolation of the idea that the first chair in human history could have been a stone and Dekton Kelya helped bring the idea to fruition,’ explains the designer.

Talyd, by Aljoud Lootah

Drawing inspiration from the traditional large metal pots used for cooking over an open fire, Talyd is a collection of vases that pays homage to the UAE’s rich culinary culture and the everyday utensils and objects intertwined with the livelihood of the Emiratis of a bygone era.

Meaning legacy in Arabic, Talyd is a modern interpretation of archaeological finds. While the shapes and proportions of the vases are influenced by the original artefacts, they are repurposed as functional objects of curiosity with a minimalist design approach. The designer opted for the colours Kreta, Lunar, Sasea and Laos for these one-off pieces. ‘I was very excited about the idea of exploring the material in a completely new way and creating three-dimensional and functional products,’ points out Aljoud Lootah.

Paper Coffee Table, by Fadi Sarieddine

Paper Coffee Table is a creation that celebrates the thinness of Dekton Slim. Featuring a thin 4 mm exposed edge, the material appears to hover like a table top, a feat of engineering achieved by a system of voluminous solid walnut legs held in place with metal tension rods. The slimness of the slab is visually enhanced by the deliberately voluminous legs. Paper Coffee Table, designed by Fadi Serieddine, owes its elegance to this contrast, as well as to the geometry generated by the structural factors of tension and compression. The striking combinations of materials also play a key role in complementing the morphology of the table, whose top is finished in Dekton Kreta. ‘Paper Coffee Table helped me to explore the features of the material and to look into its new dimensions when applied to furniture,’ comments Fadi Sarieddine.

Carapace Console, by Nada Debs

In line with Nada Debs’ philosophy of creating unusual combinations of materials, this console creates a synergy of opposing elements through a playful geometric composition of natural and industrial elements that fit together seamlessly. Craftsmanship can be found in the precise marquetry using the signature pattern of the houses of the region, hence the name ‘Carapace’ meaning ‘shell’. ‘The aim was to create a synergy between Cosentino’s cutting-edge technology and the intricate craftsmanship of the region,’ explains designer Nada Debs, who chose the colours Kelya, Kreta and Lunar to bring this piece to life.
