After many years as a co-founder and partner in Haptic Architects (London/Oslo), Nikki Butenschön has just started the architectural office Butenschön & Scholz, which specializes in smaller-scale architecture and design. He creates conceptual, unpretentious and tailor-made projects in several categories such as housing, cabins, retail and hospitality.
From natural stone to technical Stone
Nikki set about refurbishing her new apartment after a break-up, and every centimeter has been thought out and used. As a professional, Nikki is concerned with materials, and has a particular fondness for natural materials. The fact that he should fall for Dekton, which is a technically ultra-compact stone, perhaps surprised him the most.
“I was looking for a warm, warm natural stone such as Jura limestone or Grigio Alpi. These are fragile stones, especially considering the enormous size of my kitchen island, as well as the potential lack of strength in the cantilevers. I was therefore overjoyed when I found the new Pietra Kode series from Cosentino and especially the beautiful Nebbia, with its fossils and even subtle patterning”, says Nikki.
The color Dekton Nebbia is part of one of the latest collections from Dekton, Pietra Kode, and is inspired by precisely the stone Grigio Alpi with a fine-grained creamy base with a pattern in taupe hues. The unique properties mean that Nikki can gather family and friends around the big island without fear of the new stone getting ugly stains, being scratched or damaged in any other way.
Knowledge creates sustainable design
In Nikki's work as a designer and architect, functionality, playfulness and longevity are important keywords. They align well with Cosentino's values, which focus on environmentally friendly production and advanced technology to create long-lasting products.
“The most important thing for me is to create good spatial experiences with beautiful and subtle solutions. Everyone talks about sustainability: The most sustainable thing will always be to draw timeless. If you are too trend-focused, the result will unfortunately be renovations every three years. For me, it is important to push the customer's knowledge of aesthetics and architecture forward so that you avoid a generic result that your tired neighbor also has,” says Nikki.
Recycling and crafts
Apart from the old kitchen cabinets that Nikki has reused, Henriksen Snekkeri AS has specially made the fronts from ash veneer. They are treated with the hard wax oil Rubio monocoat which provides protection and the nice, golden colour. The worktop and the stone on the island from Dekton have been cut and fitted by Ellingaard Collection, so that they fit to the millimetre. This collection of professionals has created a unique kitchen, where every detail matches each other.
"I am probably of the old guard who prefer wood to laminate, a wood fireplace to a gas fireplace and natural stone to composite. But then Cosentino entered my sphere and showed me beautiful products whose wear resistance surpasses nature's,” concludes Nikki.
