Non-Binary Cross Space

The revamp of this flat eliminated the outmoded original partitioning, in favor of an undefined cruciform space that lends itself to multiple options

This revamped dwelling is located in an old fifteen-storey block built in the 50s. The pre-existing space was a heavily compartmentalized flat with 9 “rooms” distributed in only 100m². A fixed hybrid space is not required, but it must have the space-time capacity of changing depending on the needs of its users and the specific contexts, whether this is daily, weekly or for long periods of time.

The main space is unobstructed, whereas each of the rooms with specific uses – the two bedrooms – is hidden behind a door that is built into de wooden paneling of the lateral storage bands. Furniture, objects, materials and construction details had to be non-binary as well: Nothing is associated with a specific function. only the common natural elements to the binary typologies of architecture can be seen.
