Cape Town-based furniture design studio MŪVEK, a joint venture of Chris van Niekerk and János Cserháti, creates furniture designs defined by structural alignment and the beauty of simplistic forms.
One of twelve designs available from the studio is the MŪ16181 shelving range, utilitarian yet refined low-level stainless-steel shelves topped with Dekton. With six cavities and three surface levels, the minimalist design emphasises the assembly of the structure and its ingeniously designed joints.
Floating shelves
A mild-steel structure with thin powder-coated shelves and decorative Dekton top surfaces, the MŪ16181 shelving system has an effortlessly industrial aesthetic that teeters between functionality and art.
The shelving system, which appears to hover above the floor thanks to the use of adjustable stainless-steel glides, directs the attention of viewers to the slim shelves and vertical partitions with their stylish visible joint structure.
A sleek surface
Because this is a shelving system with diverse intentions, MŪVEK had to choose a material for the surfaces that could withstand any and all uses. Dekton Sirius, a matte-finish, gently textured black from the Solid collection, pairs perfectly, the 8 mm decorative Dekton surface blending seamlessly with the polished powder-coated black stainless steel.
Cosentino’s ultra-compact stone was an ideal choice to finish the MŪ16181 shelves thanks to its unique mix of beauty and functionality. A unique ultra-compaction process leaves Dekton without micro-defects that cause tension and weak points, making the surface abrasion, scratch and impact resistant, as well as water and stain resistant.
The finished product
‘The MŪ16181 shelving system is the result of nearly two years of testing and research,’ says the design team. Aiming to make shelves that were much more than merely functional, ‘When conceiving this piece, our aim was to create a functional object with clear, visible and refined details that would elevate the simple function of a shelving system. The final result is a robust, customisable design that points beyond utility and becomes a feature piece in itself.’
