Transforming a small square kitchen into an open-plan day space integrating kitchen, living and dining areas was the main goal of this renovation carried out by Newr in Deakin (Australia). However, the result far exceeds mere functionality, creating a luxurious interior featuring the curved shapes of lacquered wooden cabinets, the skylight above the island, and the ultra-compact Dekton surface by Cosentino.
“The transformation involved the removal of structural walls, roof re-engineering and the relocation of the skylight to maximise light entry and spatial flow, as well as the addition of a pantry and laundry room, improving functionality and storage throughout the space,” the studio recalls.
Beauty and functionality to complement marble
The kitchen front features striking Calacatta Viola marble. However, for the worktops, a material of the same aesthetic level but more functional and low-maintenance was chosen, allowing the space to be used comfortably and effortlessly with family and friends.
“Dekton Albarium was used in the kitchen, pantry and laundry room to ensure continuity and practicality in high-use areas. Its high resistance to stains, scratches and heat made it an ideal choice for these spaces, especially in a home where the kitchen serves as the central hub,” says Newr. “The material was also chosen for its ability to complement the richness of the Calacatta Viola marble fronts, allowing this natural stone surface to remain the focal point while reinforcing the coherence of the material palette,” they continue.
Thus, according to the designers, the colour palette was chosen to create a serene and timeless base that complements the architectural elements of the home. “Balanced and understated finishes were sought, allowing features such as the curved ceiling and Calacatta Viola front to stand out without overwhelming the space. The tones used in the worktops and cabinetry bring warmth and continuity throughout the kitchen, as well as the service kitchen and laundry room.”
A magazine-worthy service kitchen
In the service kitchen, despite not being a space normally open to guests, the same delicate color palette and materials are maintained as in the rest of the house. At the same time, Dekton is also used for the countertop to ensure both visual refinement and maximum practicality.
“The Dekton worktop extends to create a continuous connection with the kitchen, while vertically arranged Moroccan handcrafted tiles introduce a subtle contrast of textures against the Calacatta Viola marble. Black cabinetry was intentionally used in the service pantry and laundry room, allowing the kitchen to remain the focal point while these spaces discreetly recede into the background,” the studio concludes.
