In Vuokatti (Finland), amidst a forest, by a lake and near a major ski resort. This is where Olympic skier Kerttu Niskanen and cross-country skier Juho Mikkonen decided to build their home. The site would replace an old cabin with a sauna and was designed by Studio Rosberg, while the interior design was entrusted to Johanna Hernesniemi from Studio Hernesniemi.

Today, three years later, that dream is now a reality. The athletes have been sharing the process on social media, and many have fallen in love with the calm, sophisticated, and natural atmosphere of the house, named Villa Murunen.

Recently, they shared a post with a photo of the kitchen, saying it was the heart of the ground floor. “We spend so much time here!” they stated. They also mentioned Aina Keittiöt, the company that provided the furniture for the space, as well as Cosentino, whose spectacular surface covers the cascading island, the worktop, and the subtle front.

Inspired by nature

With extraordinary shine achieved through the polished finish of XGloss technology, Dekton Khalo offers a spectacular glow that enhances its complex and colourful chromatic structure. Deep blacks, pale golds, and toasted browns create a unique colour in the market, designed to create striking environments.

In this case, Hernesniemi chose to clad the rest of the room in white tones and wood, which balance the choice of Dekton Kahlo without competing with it. These colours also integrate perfectly with the natural landscape visible through the large windows.

“I am inspired by functionality, beauty, and durability. I like interior design to harmoniously fit with the surrounding nature, especially in new constructions where large windows are often used. It’s wonderful when nature integrates seamlessly into the interior... I could say that nature inspires me greatly as well,” reflects the designer.

Beauty and durability in the kitchen

These large windows also expose materials to UV rays, which is no problem for Dekton: the surface retains its colour despite prolonged sun exposure, and it doesn’t scratch, stain, or get damaged by impacts or cuts, ensuring a lifespan of at least 25 years.

Along with the striking colour, this durability and ease of maintenance are other aspects that caught the interior designer’s attention, who is also very impressed with Cosentino’s manufacturing processes. “I have used Dekton in many projects and ended up choosing it because both the selection and the product are excellent. I also participated in a trip to the Cosentino factory and got to know the process from design to implementation, which made me appreciate the development and quality of the product much more,” she concludes.
