ºC Gotanda
Jo Nagasaka / Schemata Architects Architecture
Tokyo, Japan
The chain ºC, known for its capsule hotels offering rest and relaxation, has opened a new facility in the vicinity of Gotanda Station.

Designed by Schemata Architects, it has everything necessary to enable users to relax completely for the almost five hours that their stay lasts. The project involved renovating a preexisting pod hotel. The tiny capsule rooms were maintained in the final design, while the rest of the building was given an overhaul. Stripping the original claddings of the lower floors revealed surfaces so forceful and expressive that they were incorporated, as they were, by the new sauna and baths. This ruinous dark nature of the new spaces is maintained throughout the renovation project, culminating in a much brighter room on the top floor, the lounge. As for the actual capsules, the only changes made were on the walls, which were stripped of wallpaper and left bare, in line with the unfinished aesthetic that governs the rest of the hotel. With its location, this new establishment of the ºC group caters only to men.
