After planning the extension of their home, these clients approached Mint to help zone their kitchen, meals and lounge area to be great for entertaining, as well as family friendly. The layout of the kitchen was designed to be functional and to accommodate as much storage as possible. Hence drawers were used throughout. The kitchen features integrated appliances, a wall oven and coffee machine as well as an induction cooktop, with a feature glass splashback. Dekton was used for the benchtops and selected for durability, with the beautiful soft vein being picked up by the light grey used on the island cabinetry. It was important that the kitchen still felt warm and inviting so V groove panelling was used on the island to introduce texture, and then a light timber woodgrain on the open shelf, cupboard on the island and in the walk-in pantry. To keep the clean lines of the kitchen, the drawersand overheads had integrated handles, keeping feature pull handles to the taller doors. The biggest challenge was to incorporate a study desk within the space, as the clients didn’t want to create a separate room and another doorway along the hallway, or to have the desk on view. The solution was to reconfigure the idea of the walk-in pantry to accommodate it. The main pantry storage was then placed behind shallow the cupboards parallel to the end of the island bench, leaving the walk-in pantry for more of a small appliance and a bar setup. The desk was then on the right, tucked out of the way and had its own overhead and drawer storage. Overall, the new kitchen could be best described as clean and contemporary. By creating an overhang on the island there is plenty of room for the young family to be able to sit at, to gather around when entertaining and a quiet desk area for the kids to do homework on, whilst still being incorporated into the family space.
