Enrico Fermi School
The revamped Fermi Secondary School in Turin opens out to the city’s urban sphere with an innovative teaching format
The Enrico Fermi Secondary School becomes part of Turin’s urban fabric with a new main entrance located where the old school’s rear facade was, extending toward the city as a large green space directly connected to the service facilities concentrated at ground level. The new metal structure, joined to the original construction, gives rise to the modular terraces that expand the education program outdoors.
The facades of the new front and those facing the courtyards all have large windows enhancing the relationship between the different volumes and the exterior spaces, giving new meaning to the original layout. In the two upper floors, the atrium is used for recess, while actual educational activities take place in units that connect exterior and interior in an experimental new method of teaching in the open air.
