House on an island
Atelier Oslo Architects
Skåtøy Island, Norway
On the southern Norwegian island of Skåtøy, characterized by rocks gently curving down to the ocean, Atelier Oslo has built this summer cabin for two artists, a retreat where they can work and connect with nature.

Stairs at the back connect the cabin to the rock while penetrating the building all the way to the entrance in front, in a gradual way that involves a transition process.
There are two volumes: the actual dwelling, and a smaller construction that can be used for storage or shelter although its real purpose is more privacy, forming a physical barrier between the property and the neighbors. Concrete terraces and stairs are very carefully placed around the building, fusing with the rock at various levels.

These surfaces enter the house, dissolving the lines between interior and exterior. Inside, the surroundings become part of the architecture, the upper part of which is wrapped in a light timber structure that filters incoming sunlight and frames views of the scenery, creating a play of shadows during the day and a warm cozy atmosphere at night.
