Bilbao, Spain
Norman Foster has a true passion for automobiles, a devotion which in his architecture has made him pursue beauty and high technology in equal shares
Curated by Norman Foster, the exhibition at the Guggenheim Bilbao covers over a century in the history of car design, analyzing the relationship with architecture and art. The seven halls and seven themes that organize the almost forty vehicles in the exhibition analyze a key historic moment in automobile design, considering affinities between the different disciplines.
The exhibition considers affinities between technology and art, showing, for example, how the wind tunnel helped to give the automobile its stylized aerodynamic shape, increasing its speed through a more economical use of power. The streamlining revolution inspired the Futurist movement and other artists of the period, and was reflected in the industrial design of everything.
