On the northern coast of Portugal, Matosinhos is one of those places where architecture interacts best with the Atlantic light. Here, the studio Matos dos Santos Architects, founded by Luís Santos and Rita Sousa, has designed a home that embodies the formal precision, harmony, and calm that characterise their work.
“The choice of neutral colours and the tactile richness of the surfaces contribute to creating a serene and timeless atmosphere, where natural light takes centre stage and enhances the textures and subtle tones of the materials,” the architects add. The result is a sophisticated yet discreet space, full of sensory balance, an architecture that prioritises comfort and harmony. In this context, Cosentino and its ultra-compact surface Dekton become fundamental allies in creating the desired atmosphere.
Dekton as the connecting thread
Dekton by Cosentino is present throughout the home, both in the kitchen and bathrooms, consolidating the idea of visual unity and material coherence. The architects explain: “The choice of Dekton as a cladding material in the bathrooms —applied to walls, floors, and integrated washbasins— reinforces the idea of unity and visual continuity, while ensuring resistance, durability, and ease of maintenance.”
In the kitchen, the colour Dekton Marmorio covers both the island and the worktop, establishing visual continuity with the walls and floors of the rest of the home. In the master suite, Dekton Sabbia has been chosen for the floors, walls, and shower, complemented by the same Dekton Marmorio on the washbasin, while the second bathroom features a composition in Dekton Nebbia, applied to the walls, shower, and washbasin.
This combination creates a chromatic and tactile harmony that defines the character of the project. “The colours used are the result of a conscious and carefully studied choice by the architectural studio, aimed at reinforcing the minimalist identity and overall harmony of the space. These decisions reflect a clear and coherent aesthetic vision, and I personally feel truly amazed by the final result, by the way the colours interact with the textures, accentuate the character of the space, and translate the essence of the project,” explains Luís Santos.
Trust, durability, and precision
The studio chose Dekton surfaces for something that is not always easy to achieve. “The use of Dekton by Cosentino in this project represents a choice based on trust, durability, and long-term assurance. It is a material with high resistance to scratches, stains, moisture, and thermal variations, ensuring exceptional performance and minimal maintenance over the years,” the architects comment.
But beyond its technical properties, there is an emotional reason behind the choice. “Dekton gives me a sense of security and reliability as a designer. It is a material that maintains its stability, colour, and texture even after years of use, offering consistent quality that supports the minimalist and rigorous language of the project.”
Overall, the house designed by Matos dos Santos Architects is a lesson in balance: every surface, proportion, and reflection has been carefully considered to create a specific sensory experience. Dekton acts as a mediator between form and matter, providing continuity and solidity without compromising visual delicacy.
