A house in the shape of overlapping boxes

‘GT House is an experiment in infusing outdoor living, making the outdoors part of the indoors and vice versa,’ says Diàfan Arquitectura. This Balearic studio, known for its bright, open and sustainable building designs, has conceived this project in the form of boxes: a white box on the ground floor and another box covered purely with wood just above it.

‘The entire wooden covering of the first floor volume and the sliding shutters are made of pinewood slats, all of which are of different dimensions and randomly distributed, so that no pattern is visible. The slats are spaced a few millimetres apart to allow air to pass through, thus becoming a reinterpretation of traditional Mallorcan shutters. In this way, it also acts as a ventilated façade, providing additional thermal insulation,’ they continue.

Wood, the key feature

Both the interior and exterior of this house located in Colònia de Sant Pere (Mallorca) stand out for their formal simplicity of neutral tones and the reduced use of materials. Wood is, of course, the most prominent material among them. ‘It is a living, natural material that ages like life and the occupants of the home,’ assures the studio.

In fact, it is this material that allows for the integration of the interior and exterior thanks to the sliding panels that adorn the façade of the house. They serve to protect from the sun, provide privacy or, when open, connect the interior with the garden, making normally private spaces, such as the living room or the kitchen, completely exposed, as if they were a large porch. This idea is reinforced by the use of the same flooring in all spaces to provide continuity.

Dekton sustainable worktop, the perfect complement

The main living space of this unique home consists of a living room, a dining room and a kitchen. According to Diàfan Arquitectura, the kitchen is considered ‘a piece of furniture’, stating that it is ‘a pure black volume formed by a line of tall units and a volume in the centre’. Furthermore, a wooden bar gently placed just above the island brings the right warmth to the space and integrates it into the house as a whole.

Along with this bar, the Dekton Domoos worktop in graphite black and matt finish creates a refined, sober and elegant look. Naturally, for such a sustainable project, the ultra-compact Dekton surface was chosen not only for its exceptional aesthetic properties and superior performance (including very high resistance to scratches and stains, as well as heat and fire), but also because it is a carbon neutral product throughout its life cycle.

This UN recognition confirms the good practices of the Cosentino Group in terms of environmental management. This has been achieved through the application of best available techniques and process optimisation, leading to greater energy and resource efficiency, the use of renewable electricity and sustainable mobility policies. In addition, the emissions produced are offset by investment in projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Thanks to solutions such as wood cladding, the use of panels to blend the interior and the exterior, the choice of a Dekton worktop and the installation of solar panels and rainwater harvesting cisterns, the cosy GT House is a fully sustainable home.
