A Brooklyn Brownstone Reborn: Dekton Featured in Bathroom and Laundry Spaces of the 2024 REAL SIMPLE Home

On a cool, fall-September evening in Brooklyn, New York, the 2024 REAL SIMPLE home was officially unveiled - an 1890s brownstone reno full of design ideas from leading designers and architects from across the country. As Editor-in-Chief Lauren Lannotti described it in the Editor's Note of the magazine’s October issue - “you’ll find both the fantasy and the reality, beautiful rooms you’ll want to move right into and on-trend inspiration you can steal immediately. This year's ideas home is a little quieter than what we’ve done in the past because our design partners honored the history of the building that existed on a sunny, broad block in the Crown Heights neighborhood for 130-odd years.”

Designers Amber Guyton, Mikel Welch, and Jasmine Roth selected Cosentino’s ultracompact stone Dekton for their spaces, ensuring beautiful design and durability to take this home into its next era.

Amber from Blessed Little Bungalow is the designer behind the beautifully color-splashed and whimsical Laundry Lounge located on the third floor. Boasting purples, seafoam, fun art, and tons of patterns, Amber brought in the soothing cream-toned Dekton Limbo to complement the space. She used the surface as a countertop above the washer and dryer appliances, a perfect spot to organize laundry and for the sink vanity area. “I think this Dekton top and color choice is great for any surface whether it is a bathroom, kitchen - and so laundry room often time there isn’t room for a counter surface or even a sink so it was a perfect addition to this space.”

For the primary room and bath, Mikel of Mikel Welch Design sought to meld the home's old-world charm with a modern feel. In the bathroom, he was inspired by travels to Austin, Texas, bringing warm reds and greens into the space while maintaining a classic look that withstood time. He chose Dekton Rem with a honed finish for the counter and the backsplash for a smooth, cohesive look. “We wanted to give them (homeowners) a very refined, hotel feel to their space,” explains lead designer for Mikel Welch, Jeanna George.

HGTV star Jasmine Roth brought the traditional feel to her guest suite and patio space, including a red and white bathroom where she selected the Dekton Taga for the countertop. Real Simple Magazine’s Home Director, Erica Finmore, shares “What I love about this surface is that it has tons of pattern and feels like a texture in this room. It really warms up the whole space and goes with the wallpaper, bringing in the browner tones, some of the gray in the tile work – I just think it does a really good job at echoing the rest of the color palette.”
