• With Dektonclay, Xavier Mañosa explores the versatility of the ultracompact surface Dekton® around the idea of the kitchen.
• Dektonclay can be seen from the 4th to the 9th of April in the exhibition Ladies and Gentlemen during Milan Design Week.
Milan, 4 April 2017.- Cosentino, global company leader in the production and distribution of innovative surfaces for design and architecture, presents Dektonclay, a new project designed by Apparatu which explores the versatility of the ultracompact surface Dekton®. This project is result of the collaboration started three years ago between Cosentino and the ceramic atelier and Spanish design studio lead by Xavier Mañosa.
Dektonclay can be visited from the 4th to the 9th of April in #Room1 Via Cesare Correnti 14 in Milan during the 15th edition of Milan Design Week, in the collective exhibition Ladies and Gentlemen, coproduced by 5VIE, a non-profit organization whose objective is to promote cultural and territorial development of the historic centre of Milan.
For this new Dekton® project, Xavier Mañosa explores the concept of the Kitchen, creating a collection of pieces that gathers cooking and eating through one material. Attracted by the idea of using the same material in every part of the kitchen, he presents a collection of table and kitchenware, furniture pieces and even a kitchen itself. The ovens, the kitchen top, the structure and the handles are created with Dekton®, modelling, pressing, extruding, and firing, pushing the malleability of the material in different artisanal processes, all together with the easy but decisive strength of the fire coming from the stove.
The aim of the ceramist was to discover new ways of working with Dekton®, to find out how the material behaved under different temperatures or conditions of density; to find out how versatile Dekton® could be; and the different uses to which it could be subjected.
After that time, new and varied questions arose about the creative process. How could the industrialised production of the material be combined with Mañosa’s artisanal way of working? How could it be enhanced with a three-dimensional quality? How could Dekton be designed to achieve different contrasts, textures or ranges of colour?
Dektonclay combines Apparatu’s crafted pieces with the industrially produced ultracompact surface in its black colour Spectra XGloss. Dekton® XGloss is the family of ultra-brilliant Dekton® surfaces, which thanks to an advanced nanotechnological treatment, developed by Cosentino R+D department, combined with a sophisticated mechanical polishing process give to the material unique technical performance in the market and a dazzling crystal shine.
Xavier Mañosa remarks: “I chose this Dekton® XGloss finish specifically because its spectacular glossy surface contrasts with the matte finish of the moulded pieces that serve as a support, thus creating a very powerful glossy/matte visual effect.”
Apparatu is a ceramic atelier and design studio lead by Xavier Mañosa. Xavier grew up among ceramics, seeing what his parents did at Art-Foc, the studio they founded in 1968. Kilns, clay, water and wheels have always been familiar to him. Nine years ago, Mañosa took over the family studio and renamed it Apparatu. Today, the studio is an effervescent, creative place that has no limits when it comes to combining design, research and creativity.
About Dekton® by Cosentino
The Dekton® by Cosentino ultra-compact surface is a new and innovative category of surfaces created with the objective of becoming a global leader in the world of architecture and design both for indoor and outdoor spaces.
Dekton® is a sophisticated mixture of the raw materials that is used to manufacture glass, porcelain materials and quartz surfaces. The Dekton® surface can recreate any type of material with a high level of quality. It is manufactured in large format (up to 320 cm x 144 cm) and thin thicknesses (0.8 cm, 1.2 cm and 2 cm). It as superior technical characteristics: resistance to UV rays, scratches, stains, thermal shock and very low water absorption.
These characteristics unique to Dekton® are present thanks to the technology used in its production, which has been developed exclusively by the Cosentino Group’s R&D department. Dekton® is manufactured with Technology of Sinterized Particles (TSP), an innovative ultra-compaction process. This contributes greatly to the fact that Dekton® is a completely revolutionary product; it is durable, very easy to maintain, and has potential for both indoor and outdoor uses including flooring, façades, wall cladding and worktops.
The prestigious architect and designer Daniel Libeskind used Dekton in the creation of “Beyond The Wall”, his only work in the Iberian Peninsula. Dekton® is sponsor of the “Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar”, where more than 40.000 m2 of the product have been used in different areas such as the façades, flooring and other coverings.
Dekton XGloss has obtained Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016
